Re: The Most Fresh & Cordial Political Thread Ever

Why are we ok with bailing out businesses but bailing out the everyday person is frowned upon? Let’s stop with the mental gymnastics of trying to differentiate between PPP loans and student loans and why one is on and one isn’t. Everyone can benefit by catching a break now and then. If someone got $200k in free government money to keep their business afloat but is mad at someone getting $20k in student loan relief, that’s just the epitome of selfishness and being an overall shitty person. I know people that benefited from the PPP, and I know plenty that will benefit from the student loan forgiveness, including myself.

For one, COVID was a worldwide pandemic that was involuntary. I think lots of people supported a program that in theory helped the businesses that actually needed it the most, not the disaster that our government rolled out in this shitty PPP program, that let all these rich people take advantage. Once again, another thing that our government fucks up, but I should just be happy and keep sending in my money.

No one forced anyone to go to college and incur those debts. Don't want student loans, don't go to college, or go to a school you can actually afford. Or if you need loans because you want to go to college and its too expensive, pay back your own loan(s). It's not my or anyone else's responsibility to do so. I have my own financial burdens as a middle class fuck trying to get by.

There seems to be this argument that everyone against this student loan debt vote buying plan is also 100% for businesses taking advantage of other programs.

I'm not for either of them. Just another 300 to 500 billion dollars, ehhh, no big deal.

This country lives in fantasy land about money, deficits, and debt.

I'm not opposed to people getting help. Most of us need it from time to time. I would just like to see "them" address the underlying issues that got us here in the first place. I don't see that happening. What I see is more handouts right before an election.

Anyway, can I get a retro payment of $10k since I paid mine off already? Or am I ineligible because I made the necessary sacrifices to ensure I paid my bills on time, paying them off, and honoring my end of the contract?

Because some bailouts help and some don't. Student loan bailouts are actually a continuation of the proximate cause of education debt - easy access to government money driving up the cost of college. It helps those with current loans but hurts even more those that will be paying for college in the future.

Good for you Matty! That’s awesome. I agree - it’s nice to see someone who deserves help getting it.

When I say someone who deserves it I mean someone like yourself, a productive member of society who isn’t uber rich - dont wanna see someone who wont help themselves get help - dont wanna see someone who doesn’t need the help get help. Im happy for you.

The big picture that needs to be addressed - like Chief alluded to - is getting a cap put on how much these universities can fucking charge.

I definitely agree this doesn’t get to the underlying issues, but even if it’s a band aid it will help somebody.

As for your situation I say that’s great you were able to pay them off and don’t need any help. I say that with all sincerity. I’ve been paying on mine since 2006 and have barely put a dent in the principal because I’m on an income sensitive plan. It’s depressing as hell to see what little I’ve paid off. I’m lucky since it’s my only real debt. Plenty of people are way more buried than I am.

Lol. Will never happen. Just like every other government program/decision/etc., a bunch of fat cats will all get their cut too. Nothing will change. Then we will need a new bailout in x number of years.

Government creates the problems then does nothing to actually fix them, while spending billions of dollars, and we are told it must be done.

Rinse and repeat. Our federal government is a laughable joke. I agree with Sunny, that we are fucked. But likely for different reasons.

G1 lives in a world where everything started in 2016.

Just because you're obsessed with Trump doesn't mean everyone else needs to be.

The problems with college prices started WAY before Trump was ever president.

1 trick pony.

So the costs of going to college was completely reasonable until 2016?

No one else on either side is arguing that.

You're a clown.

And I lived in the real world, my parents and myself paid 100% of my college education all the way thru grad school.
