Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.

It sounds like if they raise it, like they will for U2, then they have to disconnect it. JJ has said that they will raise it to accomodate U2's stage, and charge U2 2Million dollars, but then lower it again for games. It's not as simple as pressing a button, because once raised the screen does not work. Certainly seems fixable, but one other comment I found interesting was that if it is raised, then JJ's view of it is skewed. I don't know if that is true, but that would be the kicker, if everytime he sat in his perch he was reminded of the punt fiasco.

Love it!

They can't use extension cords (cables)? This keeps getting better. I hope the league mandates they just remove it altogether.

I see the NFL Competition Committee has a conference call today to contemplate that crappy contraption.

I'll admit the screen looks awesome, but it's a fail on the execution end. It's hilarious to see punts shanking off of it.

It's impressive in size and technology, no doubt, but it probably doesn't look awesome while in the stadium, as I posted before...it has to be a huge distraction when trying to watch the field. It stretches from the 20 to the 20 yard-line, you can't escape it.

It's well suited for a Madden tournament, but not really for a live game. It gets in the way visually as well as physically on punts.

I agree. Unless you're sitting in the lower level, most fans probably aren't even watching the field.

There are some folks on a Cowboys board who went to the game the other night and talked about this. The general consensus of fans who seem sane (a minority on a Cowboys board) is that those in the lower levels are not distracted but those in the upper levels cannot escape the presence of the screens to focus on the field. Some said that they could not see the field well because the screens were in the way.

I'm laughing at you Dallas, not with you.

Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.

Maybe the point of the 85 foot rule was that a regular score baord would be fine at that height. But a screen half the size of the field? I doubt it.

Who knows when the rule was written. Maybe when it was written most punters couldn't punt it that high?

All I know is that Jerrah's assertion that it won't be an issue in general is bullpoop. It's gonna get hit a dozen times this year.

Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.

I can't believe how long this thread has gone on for...

Dallas did testing before they installed the screens. Mat McBriar was hitting the 100 foot mark with regularity, yet Jerry Jones still installed it at 90 feet. McBriar is also more of a directional punter, so the height won't affect him as much.

It's not a fail on Jones' part. He had the screens installed at more than the league minimum and do so knowing the conditions of his own punter.

I also think Trapasso and Hentrich were trying to hit it, and being a preseason game, who cares if they did...

We'll see how it unfolds, but I honestly don't see this being a major issue. A minor one, maybe, but I don't think we'll see more than a few do-overs over the course of the season.

Where did you ever read/hear that McBriar did testing? McBriar admitted publicly just this week that he was never asked, nor did he, kick to test in the new stadium for height issues.

Yeah because the stadium was built with the screens in mind so it'd be too late to test in the new stadium... are you saying that there's going to be a huge diff in that stadium vs the one he did kick in?

You never cease to provide humor on this site.

Lol, well yeah I can see that. But I was just asking for clarification is all. His post seemed to imply that McBriar kicked at the new stadium. But he actually kicked at the Alamodome in San Antonio, and yes I was at training camp most days as I live in SA.

But, what goes without saying is after ALL the media, Peyton Place, Pacman, Tank and T.O drama and BS we were forced to endure last season, if the biggest buzz around the Cowboys is a friggin BACKUP punter clipping the scorebord during a preseason game, then I am a happy guy.

You left out the drama of Romo falling apart at the end of every season and playoffs.
