Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!

I'm eagerly waiting the Jim Fassell signing so I can change my avatar. I'm not changing my avatar until the new head coach is official

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!

Spags had a terriffic defensive game plan for the Pats, and has had his D play terriffic games through the playoffs. He would have done great things with a talented skins defense that is ready to match up with the nfls best.

Ok, but we're not looking for a defensive coordinator.

You're right, I give up on Spags.

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!

I'm glad we did not hire Spags.

I think that hiring a defensive HC would ruin what little bit of continuity this team retained by making Greg B DefCor. We need an offensive mind at HC and leave the D alone! I'm not ready for a total rebuild!

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!

I just don't understand how anyone can be so for Fassel. The guy was 58-52 in 7 seasons (including 2-3 in the playoffs). His most recent NFL experience was getting fired as the OC of the Ravens. The Giants teams he coached were only rememberable for being so damn boring. Look I am not against the guy and lord knows I'll wish him the very best if he gets the job, but I am just lukewarm about the guy at best.

It's called going back to the past. I don't know if you are old enough to remember the Jack Pardee days? That's the impression of what we'll get with Fossil.

My question is did Pardee even get a fair chance...didn't he get just one season before being let go?

SmootSmack why do you believe that Fassel is the best the Redskins can get of who is out there. My not some one else? Also it seem strange to pick other coaches before the HC?

Well I think the Cowboys did it last year, the Dolphins did it this year. I think it could be a new trend where the front office will be responsible for not just the players but also the coaching staff (the entire staff).

Anyhow, we can't pretend that Zorn and Blache don't exist so let's be sure to consider that when asking ourselves what makes Fassel a good candidate, better than Spagnuolo, Meeks, or Mariucci:

-Fassel was a head coach in the NFC East for seven years (seven right?). Even though his last head coaching gig was four years ago. No other candidate could claim that, Spags was at best a coordinator for one year

-Fassel is battle tested dealing with the New York media. So DC shouldn't be too hard. As I mentioned in another thread, the only job more scrutinized in DC than President is Redskins Head Coach. It may not seem like a big deal but the HC of this team is someone who has to have a "presence" and not wilt under the spotlight. The only other head coach was Mariucci who had to deal with the "hard-hitting" San Fran and Detroit media

-There are many recent examples of head coaches getting a second chance, and being largely successful the second time around. More so than sustained success for first time coaches. Here's where you can argue for Mooch perhaps as well

-Fassel has made it to the Super Bowl so he knows what it takes to get there, and it's more than the majority of NFL coaches throughout history can claim

-Fassel is highly regarded by some of the NFL's best ever QBs who have had some of their best seasons under his tutelage. Together with Jim Zorn (who along with Holmgren got more out of Matt Hasselbeck than anyone probably ever expected) they can turn Campbell into a bonafide star

-This is Zorn's first time as an offensive coordinator so I don't think it hurts to have someone with experience on that side of the ball to help him out

-Meeks and Spags are defensive minded coaches so it would just be redundant to have them along with a proven defensive coach in Greg Blache. Fassel won't get in Blache's way. (Neither would Mooch either I suppose)

-Snyder and Cerrato are comfortable with him. (Remember they were this close to hiring him in 2004). And that's very important. For one thing, it makes for a better working environment. Secondly, the more comfortable Snyder is with the coach, the less likely he is to intervene. This isn't to say they weren't comfortable with the other candidates, but I don't think to the same extent as to with Fassel

You make some great points! One other is this team has some big needs come the draft and free agency. Maybe to many for one off season. Is Fassel someone that can fill these needs and say yes or no to Danny?

Scott Campbell and Vinny Cerrato will be the key drivers behind the draft and free agency. Yes Snyder writes the checks, but when's the last time he hesitated to give his coaches what they asked for?
