I think it's a little premature to be down on the D.

LL and Atogwe were hardly on the field last year, so is there really much of a loss there?

Still a good chance Fletcher returns.

Jenkins is back, that's a plus.

Hall is still here last I checked.

regarding hall, at this point, i think its more likely they restructure his deal than release him. he's heads and shoulders above anything else on the market now. He's not a BAD corner. He's an average, starting caliber corner with big play potential. He's worth keeping, just not at his current cap figure. I'd be all about keeping him and extending/restructuring his deal to lower his cap hit.

Then again, every corner on the market this year got vastly overpaid (in my opinion), so maybe hall is getting paid fair market value.

I've often thought about how best to use Hall's great ability. I always thought he could be a great corner. Since college he's drawn the title overated, and I always thought it was his lack of focus & attention to the details. He wants to make the 1 big play more than many small plays that matter.

He wouldn't be a good FS cause he wants to gamble all the time, but is there a nicke/dime package where he could be like a 3rd safety in the middle of the field? Blache used to have the "Cobra" w/3 safeties. Don't know if that's what I'm thinking, I just see Hall being best used to roam towards the ball, not cover per se.

Yes , they did . While I happen to like much of what the F/O has done , I feel more confident that a team built around O-Line and Defense will put us in the hunt more often ( say over ten yrs w/ RG111 ) . But , if we win a SB or two with teams like NO or Indy ......... I'm on board with that too !

Hmmm...I still think we're a top 10 defense. I 100% agree with the top 4 defenses (Pitt, Baltimore, Houston, San Fran). San Fran to me was not just the best defense, but the best defense I've seen since the '00 Baltimore Ravens defense. They only allowed 1--thats right--1 rushing TD all year. Houston, we'll you got to give them mad props for turning around a 30th ranked defense into a top 5 defense. It goes to show that A) it can be done--taking a bad 4-3 defense and turning them into a 3-4 defense that is near the top the next year. Just like how when shanahan took over we had a top 10, 4-3 defense, and then we suffered badly the next year falling to 31st with our new 3-4 defense.

Last year our defense started off as a top 10 defense, but then we fell midway through the season to 13th. This season, if our defense remains intact and for the most part healthy, I will will declare our defense a failure if it isn't in the top ten this year. Middle of the pack isn't a bad ranking by nfl.com, but its not that good of a ranking either considering fhere I expect us to be and where we should be.

I think what we have to hope for is that this team plays greater than the sum of it's parts. There will be some stars recognized as a result of solid play and above all, 10+ wins. Drafting one of the top QBs in this year's draft is probably the biggest addition to this defense. It's cliche, I know.

Yardage or scoring Matty?

I think we get better almost exclusively because D. Hall is moved inside. I think he's going to have a pro-bowl year closer to the ball.
