Redskins Insider - Portis' future and the salary cap

Portis' future and the salary cap

Many in the league believe 2010 will be an uncapped year, but the current system and its rules still are in place. If the Redskins released Clinton Portis before June 1 in 2010, they could face a cap hit of as much as $14.8 million, according to league sources familiar with Portis's contract and the Redskins' cap situation.

Portis last renegotiated his contract in March 2008, receiving a signing bonus of almost $9.4 million. By the end of this season, Portis, under the terms of the renegotiated deal, will have been paid more than $2.35 million in salaries and bonuses in addition to his signing bonus. Most of Portis's 2010 base salary of almost $7.2 million is guaranteed, and he is also due roster and workout bonuses totaling about $507,000.

The Redskins also have "offset" language on the guaranteed portion of his contract. If Washington released Portis and he joined another team next season, the Redskins would receive a credit against his guarantee for any additional salary.

This seems high to me. I have his 2009 release fee just under $14M but only $8.5M for 2010. His contract's been reworked and restructured a few times so my numbers could be off but still seems like a big discrepancy. I expect his 2010 release fee to be around $8-$10M.

I'm not expert, but perhaps the key is the June 1, 2010 date and if Portis is cut after that, the cap hit is only 8.5MM?

If we're lucky, Clinton "I don't make no mistakes" Portis has played his last football for the Redskins.

+ 5

Agreed. Let's hope Clinton "i'm delusional about my own abilities" Portis will go on to bless some other franchise with his presence. But know this...whoever picks him up, the running game just got that much easier to defend against!

Our RB situation will be completely different next year. I see a Ganther, Portis, Ryan Mathews or Toby Gerhart combination.

I'd honestly rather have Rock than Portis. Rock has more heart and less wear and tear. Gerhart would be the change of pace guy we've been looking for. I'd be cool with Ganther. It'd be nice to have situational backs instead of an all purpose back.

You realize getting Gerhart would mean we're probably ignoring the line AGAIN?

We need to use the #1 on the OL.

His name was thrown out there. You'll have no arguement from me about a LT for the # 1 this year, just like last year, and the year before that, and . . .

I agree with Buster here. Everybody is chomping at the bit to get a new back, which we desperatley need, but we need to fix our line too.

Use picks on linemen, and then if we can get a good back, do it.

How do people here define "change of pace back"

I remember way back when Earnest Byner was our workhorse and then Riggs would come in for the 1-yard TD run. But I never really thought of Riggs as a change of pace back.

On the other hand, Joe Washington's 10 or so carries with a few catches thrown in...I saw him as a change of pace to Riggo's 30+ carries.

I guess what I'm getting at is I don't really see Gerhart as a change of pace back.
