Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

Anyone else get the sense that we are planning for the 2010 offseason now? Taylor, Springs and Griffin will all be off the books with no or minimal cap hits. Fletcher, Smoot, Jansen, Collins, Rock and Rabach are also candidates to be let go. (http://www.thewarpath.net/WarpathRedskinsCap.htm)

With that being the case, why sign Evans who is 29, a reserve who is a fill in starter but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that he is anything more than what he is. If he gets out there and doesn't find what he's looking for in terms of money and opportunity then certainly try to bring him back at a reasonable rate but let's not set the market for him with a starter level offer.

Funny that you mention this, because I was thinking the same thing. Someone here once said that the Redskins FO only thinks about the upcoming season and doesn't think about the future. Well I think you are right, I think they are thinking about the 2010 season and getting all of these big contracts out of the way. Even if there is no cap, we'll part ways with these old players and rejuvenate the team.

if that's the case, they better start working on this OL and getting some more draft picks.

your theory makes sense... until the skins start signing other teams aging vets to deals equal or greater than what it would have cost to keep Evans. We have to remember who we are dealing with here. Nothing Danny or Vinny have done since Danny bought the team has shown signs that they were ever really thinking beyond the upcoming season.

Not that I am really for the Haynesworth signing (for the record, I am against it) but we can't put Haynesworth and Evans in the same sentence. The only things they have in common are they play in the NFL and they are in their late 20's but other than that we're comparing grapes and grapefruits.

If we sign Big Al and don't bring back Evans it's not that we chose one equal player over the other for a ton more money, it's that one is on a completely different plane than the other.

Yes, they are on a completely different plane - One is a cheap player who was surpassed a future first ballot hall of famer on the depth chart last year and ended the season as our best defensive lineman. He's not asking for alot of money, but he would like to start.

The other is 10X more expensive, only plays about half of his units snaps, has a history of on- and off- field character-related problems, lacks motivation, and will likely stop playing once he gets that big contract.

the two should not be in the same sentence. One fits the description of a core redskin. The other fits the description of a bad team mate and piss poor example of a human being.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

Dosen't the draft have a lot to do with what we are going to do with guys like Evans??? From all I have been reading, looks like we are going after a pass rusher like Orakpo, so why would we keep Carter, Taylor, add this new rusher, and then keep an average player at best like Evans. I love Evans, but this idea of keeping him isin't that good to me?

Well, Taylor likely isn't back after next year no matter what, and we can get out of Carter's contract after 2010 if need be, so their presence don't actually affect the decision of who to draft.

With that said, I haven't heard that we're looking at the defensive line in the first round.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

well, for BHA - evans didn't play as many snaps as haynesworth as i remember, so that's not necessarily factual. evans isn't better than carter, and he wasn't better than daniels last year, so that's not true either.

evans is an okay player that shouldn't be too expensive to bring back, but he's 29 and he won't be much better than very average at best, so it's not like he'd be super hard to replace either. the skins keep 9 DL, and it's usually 4 DEs and 5 DTs, so maybe they have a FA in mind or they're comfortable they can get evans cheap after he sees there isn't much interest.

G12 - right now the skins are looking at chris canty as a FA and they've talked to orakpo (DE) for sure - and there's been plenty of talk from secondary sources (ie the guys that talk directly to danny) that they're looking OL/DL right now.

I'm a bit surprised by the Canty news. I thought he might be an option, but not a serious one

I agree with Matty- If it's between Canty and Evans, I'll take Canty every day of the week, even if he costs a good chunk more. He could be a high-level starter for us for the next 5+ years (plus he's 3 years younger than Evans).

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

I'm a purist, and I know that Evans was w/the cowpokes for a brief stint, he's made his career here. I understand why they're not offering him anything yet, let the chips fall & maybe sign him to a short cheaper deal a la Rock's deal of last year.

Canty is a really underated guy that is solid all around. But he's a cowboy (and a cavalier for that matter, but that's another story) & I hope he stays w/them or goes elsewhere. I hate it when guys sign w/the rival!
