Yeah, I wonder if there's a solder gap? Is the lcd screen backlight on? Usually you'll get a beep code, though. If you have time to waste, look on Youtube for reflowing a motherboard. It's worked for me several times and it only costs you a thermal paste tube/patch (plus the joy of completely tearing apart your laptop). You might be able to get a mobo cheap online and replace it, instead.

Re: Need Help Purchasing A Laptop

laptop motherboards aren't cheap. $100-250 depending, so you can get a new system for that.

it's probably not the bios chip, it's probably the power supply on the inside of the laptop, that tends to be a high fail item. if the northbridge etc ran superhot and the thermal transfer failed between it and the heatsink, that could cause a brick too, but it's less likely (the chip would be dead at that point) -- that happened to a laptop gpu years and years ago for me.

microcenter has a $400 15.6" dell i5 (win8) right now. office depot is still the easiest and cheap.

Notebook is the new trendy name for a laptop.

The Sleekbook must be a HP product name. The dimensions say it's 1.41" thick so that must be the reason for the name.

Don't forget Netbooks! (the mini-laptops for internet browsing)

Re: Need Help Purchasing A Laptop

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials (free download) for a couple of years and it's great.

Previously I used AVG Free and Avast but they can occasionally be buggy and I don't like all of the alerts. They used to be much better than they are now.

The MS product just works...and you never have to notice it.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

I see absolutely no reason to overpay (annually) for something like Norton or McAfee.

This would be a useful resource

Three products share the Editor's Choice honor for best overall antivirus: Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2013$39.95 at BitDefender, Norton AntiVirus (2013)$58.88 at Lenovo, and Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2013$19.99 at Webroot. Norton and Webroot tied for second place in my malware removal test, with 6.6 points. Bitdefender, with 6.4 points, wasn't far behind.

Also, if you hit up Costco at the right time they'll rebate it down to zero cost. I use and recommend Norton 360.
