Second, I still think we should not have ever traded for him in the first place. Would have loved to keep Bailey, a Hall-of-Famer, if he would have stayed. Colossal mistake, and we also gave up a 2nd (?) round pick. Portis was great, but (1) Shut-down corners are much harder to find. (2) RB's careers are much shorter (as we're seeing now). I hope Portis is okay and wish him the best. But time for a new *young* RB in the draft (after offensive line). |

Re: Portis put on IR, done for '09
The hits just keep coming. I wonder if it was the doctor's would not clear him or that he did not want play this year. I think that it would be the later. I know that he is a good player when healthy, but my guess is that whoever the new coach will be, they aren't going to put up with it, but then again he is Dan's guy. If that is the care, you also know that Portis will be back to become the Redskins all time leading rusher. You know that Snyder wants Portis to break Riggo's record on so many levels. It is unfortunate that the Redskins have become a merchandise sales vehicle as opposed to a great franchise that it used to be.

When the wheels fall off NFL running backs it is so ridiculously obvious.
Watching Portis this year was painful. He was a great NFL player. His time is over. He is mega rich. Time to move on. We can't afford to pay him three million for that type of performance next year let alone ten million. |

I don't read past page 2 of any thread. So if I repeat anything while trying to read the whole thing, I appologize...shit I forgot what I was gonna say.
Oh yeah, If CP wants to come back is a secondary role just to surpass John Riggins and retire from the team, then I would be all for it. The dude has been a warrior and I appreciate that...SB or not. And this is why you shouldn't drink and post my friends. |

About the larger topic: I'll be sad if Clinton Portis is forced to retire. I've always liked the guy and enjoyed watching him run the football for this team. I'm bothered by people questioning his toughness. He's shown us nothing other than his willingness to compete and lay it all on the line on Sundays. People say, "he threw his teammates/coach under the bus," well, you know what, maybe the guy wanted to win. I didn't care for it when he did it, but it turned out he was probably correct about what he was saying. Yeah, the guy was a diva, but he always brought it on Sundays. He was pretty much the only reason this team made the playoffs in 2005 and 2007. He put the Skins on his back and he took them there. Tom Jackson made a very accurate statement earlier in the season when he said, "You see it all the time...running backs get to a certain age and we see them start to age in dog years." At the time he was referring to Ladanian Tomlinson, but I think the same could be said for Clinton Portis. He looked like his skills may have fallen off of the cliff this year. I believe he'd still be able to show flashes of brilliance, but he'll never be the guy he was in Denver or the guy he was in 05 or 07. For that, I believe the Skins should let him go and, if he wants to continue playing, he should do so elsewhere. He's earned the right to not be benched in Washington, IMO. That said, I hope he walks away. I would really like to see him retire as a Redskin and I would like to think that he'd consider his health before a paycheck. He should have plenty of money, anyway and, from what he's said in some of these articles, I believe he will retire rather than risk further injury. |

Man look, let Portis compete in training camp next year for the starting spot. I think he would win. I believe in him and think he had an off year and has atleast two or three more 1400 yard seasons in him. Emmitt Smith lost some of his explosiveness, but still played 7 more years.

In this "what have you done for me lately" age of football, it never ceases' to amaze me how some people can so easily discredit and verbally humiliate players that have for the most part, done good things for the team. Players that when things are going well receive posivite vibes, when things go awry the tide turns.
I have always had issues with Portis, from his practice habits to his lack of pre-season participitation and controversial issues as well. Aside from those things, when it was time to play and he was on the field, he always gave his best effort and that's all you can ask of any player. |

Re: Portis put on IR, done for '09
I never, ever, had an issue with Portis as far as the athlete is concerned. I will say from 2004-2006 he gave us everything he had. The 2006 season when he was put on IR changed him i think. He became bitter and started sitting out practices. 2008 we really saw him hit the wall physically, and he was on the downhill. People didn't want to admit it. This year, 2009, Portis had absolutley NOTHING left...he played hard and with heart, but his body is broken down after so much abuse and injuries.
His attitude was always an issue here. It was well documented in news articles that Moss was the only player who consistantly had his back. He lost alot of fans when he threw Zorn under the bus last year along with everyone else. He lost player support this year when he mouthed off to Sellars after talking about him behind his back for weeks. Sure Portis wants to win, blah blah blah....but it's no excuse to take it out on others. I would bet anything Portis, with his gigantic ego, cares more about getting Riggo's record, than any team success. I am not alone in that belief. That said. Good luck to Portis and his future. I think he will find few suitors in the NFL to give him the money he's used to, plus not make him work out or practice. I dare say his career could go the way of Shaun Alexander's (how ironic, since Portis was so jealous of him)...Best Wishes

If the Redskins are willing to continue paying Portis for his limited production and poor work habits, then I can't blame him for trying to stick around. It will be worth watching to see how the team intends to proceed with his case going foreward. Without a doubt there is probbably a better bang for the buck. |

Re: Portis put on IR, done for '09
Portis had known issues with Alexander. It was well publicised and documented. Infact, When Alexander ran onto the field last year because Portis had an equipment problem, Portis got very mouthy and kind of "pouted" about it.
This also led to when Portis "took himself out" of the game last year, which Zorn got angry about...which led to Portis telling Zorn to "Get the F out of my face". (covered by nearly all news outlets). You seem to completley ignore issues of Portis' attitude or character. I am only reporting the facts on CP that most others on the board have experienced, or read about. Its kind of been hard to miss the waves that Portis has made here over the last few years...

Portis is the ultimate Primodonna. Good riddance. Just another guy taking Snyder's checks to the bank. I want someone to break Riggins record. Just not Clinton Portis.

Re: Portis put on IR, done for '09
Ok guys, I've figured it out. There is a huge conspiracy going on. It sounds like our DR. cleared him but he has to get an outside source per the NFL requesting 2 sources and one being not associated with the team.
Here's the conspiracy.......Portis went to NY to see a specialist. Think....think....we play our second game with NY within the next 4 weeks. Ta Da! Just Kidding. Always gotta be looking for the conspiracy. ![]() |
