Most important positions past 20 years:

1. QB
2. Guys who protect QB
3. Guys who pressure QB

But now ... it seems like effective edge rushers are falling from the sky and impact players are readily avail in FA. half the damn list of impact FA are edge/rush guys ... all under 30.

Clowney
Chris Jones
Ngakoue
Armstead
fowler Jr
Shaq Barrett
bud Dupree
Judon
Leaonard Williams
Robert Quinn
van Noy

That is a ton of talented rushers.

Is this a position you dont have to draft heavy on now a days? Are we late to the party? All we do is draft end guys and we end up letting guys like Preston and Trent go bc we have too many already.

Are we dumb for using high draft picks on this position? There are like no OT and Gs worth it but a ton of DE. Before you could always add a solid to good G or C in FA, never an edge. Now its like opposite.
Chase would replace Kerrigan, then you trade Kerrigan and get more cap space and a dominating pass rusher the equivalent of Quenton Nelson is to OLine. We do need a pash rusher badly.

This thread is great. For a daft Brit who didn't grow up with the game its one of the more difficult aspects to understand. I've learnt so much just reading all this. Keep it coming...

I feel you man. This is one of the reason I enjoyed this place so much. You'll learn a lot about this beautiful sport. Cap management in sports surely is not something we're used to in Europe, but it's a quite important aspect of mid to long term roster building and managing.

Managing the roster and certainly the costs associated with it is something we could really learn from in Europe - particularly our football (soccer) clubs.

Hey hey hey easy there don't throw me into that soccer lover club, I hate soccer.

Jokes aside, salary cap and the draft are 2 of the systems I love about this sport, really smart ways to help keep it competitive. The more you'll get deep into it, the more you'll love it !

We need O line and a TE bad. I hope we sink alot of money into those areas. Chase Young, and Del Rio are going to be huge upgrades on D.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2020

Modern NFL is a 2-3 year window imo. The old days of having 5 years etc is not realistic imo. So much more roster turnover now with trades, FA. If you have the QB, you can build quickly.

Donald Penn did not do an "excellent job" this past season if we are comparing him to the other starters in the league. Donald Penn did do an excellent job for a 36 year old free agent in that he stayed healthy, upright and played better than the low expectations for him.

Penns PFF grade was 64.1 which isnt bad bad. But I dont think we can count on him staying healthy all year again and his availability was his best ability imo.

Still have to trade Trent imo. His time here should have ended last offseason.

My only argument for keeping TW is for helping Haskins develop. TW would give Haskins more time in the pocket.

Rivera said he’s not interested in a long rebuild. You can bet he will have his eye on the playoffs right away. That’s why Trent still has value here.

Sure why not? The division was weak this year and everyone but Philly is going through major changes.

Seems like Hess has a good share of players both current and ex that aren’t big fans of his.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2020

I believe Trent will come back. That fills a big hole in our OL with a very good OT for a couple years. Guys gave to give up being butt hurt that TW wanted to be traded after our crappy medical department mismanaged his cancer and Bruce Allen did his usual trait of alienating our best lineman by refusing to negotiate for a new contract NOR trade him.

Trent William will help us fix our OL. Forget that he asked to be traded after dealing with one of the most dysfunctional managements in the NFL. We should welcome him back for the good of the team and protecting Haskins.

There is no evidence the team mismanaged his cancer and it is almost certainly a complete fabrication.
