Totally misread it too, but throwing 55 years ago made it seem as such. One of only three since 1960 would have been better - especially on Monday morning.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I think the way Jay and McC have treated Cousins and given him an honest shot will pay off big for us.

Im with skinsfanok, let it play out but there is a trend in kap, tannahill style deals that would work for us.

But please, Cousins and Wilson aren't the same. And Cousins will not be getting a Russell Wilson contract. That is just insanely dumb to even mention it.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Okay, to be clear, I am liking KC a lot more than a month ago. He has had three solid games without a clunker (so expect a 4 INT day against the Panthers ).

However, when it comes to contracts, to start saying he will - or should - get a Russell Wilson or Cam Newton contract is ridiculous. RW has a Superbowl ring. Cam had been a four year starter. KC has been neither of those. He is a guy who may be on the verge of being a very good QB. He still has the season to go.

If he continues to play like he has in these last three games over the rest of the season, he will get a solid, short term contract (three years real terms - maybe two). It would be ludicrous to sign him to a budget busting contract based on less than one year of consistent good play as a starter. His big contract will be his next contract if he continues to play with consistency.

He will be a tough sign but I am pretty sure, if he performs well, he gets resigned for a nice but not brutal contract.

QBs are overpaid in this league nowadays. But I agree, I don't think Cousins contract should come anywhere near what Cam or Wilson got. I really don't think the Skins should have a problem being able to sign him to a long term.

Ryan Tannehill got 4 years $77 million. Kirk is not going to be cheap. And does he want to stay in Washington ?

Only 2 places I could see as a "threat" to leave to would be the Saints or the Broncos where both QB would be retiring. Maybe the Jets?

Why wouldn't want to stay in the place that drafted him and gave him a chance to be "the guy"? Remember, nobody really tried to trade for him.

McC has been in Cousins corner and its his call.

Yes he'll stay in Washington.
He loves it there.
He wont be greedy, his contract will work for him and Washington.
Cousins is an easy going church boy.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I do not see a basis for a huge contract. The guy just completed his first three game stretch of quality play.

I see growth in KC. He is proving my assumptions of him going into the season wrong. This makes me happy.

I do not think we need to sit here with still 7 games to go in a division that we can win and debate the amount of his next contract. Still alot of football to play and a lot of growth to see.

The last thing we as a franchise need is to over pay a guy. Think of one good season for Derek Anderson or the big contract the Bills gave Fitzpatrick after one good year. This is dangerous water for us as a team as we try and build a perennial winner.

NOW if we see solid play from Kirk through out the rest of the season and finish 8-8 or better we can start to talk about his next contract.

As of right now he isn't going anywhere next year and I would be beyond excited to see this year being his stepping stone to becoming one of the better Qbs in the league (note that I did not say the next Brady, Rodgers, Manning)

If we want to keep him in DC in the offseason it will not be that hard to do.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Guys, Kirk is not getting a RW contract. Skinzwin has been debbie downer on Cousins throughout this thread and is now just throwing something out there without any basis ..

I assume with Scot and Bruce, he will get paid but not over paid. He will get paid his worth. He still has 7 or so more games to add or decease his worth.

having to extend your starting QB is a good problem to have.

If calling him average is being a debbie downer, then sure. Remember the whole Some great games... some good games... some bad games... You are claiming him as the next great QB, why say the next great QB is worth nothing?

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Me thinks a lot in here dont understand negotiating. Its the one thing that has been discussed on this board ad nauseum when it comes to who should be the QB next year. Who else is there?

The draft doesnt seem to have top notch QBs and we are not in a position to get one anyways as I doubt we have a top 5 pick. FA probably wont either. His agent fully understands that its either tag him or get into a bidding war in FA. Given the overpayments that QBs get in todays NFL, its not unreasonable to think that a team like Cleveland or the Jets will go after him. KC isnt young, but he isnt old either.

If neither the draft nor FA seem to be a place to grab a QB, then KC is going to get overpayed. If KC would take a 7 or 8 mil per year deal, something tells me that deal would have already been signed as we easily have the money next year under the cap. It still isnt an easy signing because unless we overpay or KC just wants to help us out, he will test the market.

Is it possible that McC can convince him to give him a 1 yr deal saying that the team can improve enough to get into the playoffs next year and that the payoff would easily be worth it for KC? Sure. But I guarantee you the agent is going to also be in his ear saying he is worth 20 mil per.

Lets also not forget the escalating cap, which results in escalating salaries.
