Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread

As all the picks were offensive players I just knew that some first round defensive players would slip. Happy to see we got one of them. Thanks for the write up Illini, this is the guy I'm most excited about after Daniels.

Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread

I get the concern about tackle, but for me the most important and impactful thing of this draft is going to be JD and whether or not he becomes an elite level franchise QB that can lead this team for the next decade. We've had elite left tackles here through the years and haven't won shit with them.

QB above all else. If Daniels becomes that dude, that's all we'll remember about this draft.

I think a QB needs that LT. Doesn’t have to be elite, but certainly can’t be Wylie and a rookie projected as a G. If they go into the year with that combo at OT I have no problem letting JD sit as opposed to getting killed.

The elite LT’s we have had can’t do it by themselves (they had shit at QB), the QB can’t do it by themselves either. They need protection.

Scheme and getting the ball out quick are things that can help JD right away. Getting away from EB's boneheaded offense alone will help a ton with protection.

that is what i was thinking as well, were these guys that bad or was some of it EB gameplaying, if the defense knows you are going throw every fucking time they pin their ears back

I do not disagree at all. Add a better TE, and better wheels on the qb to the list of things that can help. It’s just that right now our Tackles are super sketchy. But no matter what the scheme or personnel on offense outside the line, protection is still going to be an issue. Guess we will have to wait and see how the line shakes out.

I get what Peters is doing. He is building the right way I just want JD to be healthy physically and mentally when it all comes together. If the protection is sub par I have no issue with waiting another year to plug him in. Wouldn’t even worry about him thinking he got benched or lost the qb competition, you simply tell the kid “hey you are way too important to the future of this franchise and we need a couple more pieces up front before we are comfortable putting you out there. I would rather be miserable for one more year than to ruin JD in year one.

I think there's zero chance JD sits the bench this year, barring an off season injury.

I also don't think the O-line will be as much an issue as some think.

Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread

I think you guys are focusing on the wrong thing with Newton. If Payne and Allen play 80% of the snaps again like they did last year it minimizes their effectiveness. The best d-lines rotate guys in and out on the regular to keep them fresh. So he's in the rotation this first year. Then in 2025 both Allen/Payne are creeping closer to 30 and become bigger injury risks with large cap hits. So if one of them goes down we keep rolling because we have a young stud on a rookie contract.

And I hate to say it but we need to follow the Bill B school of roster management - when a longtime vet starts getting injured or his play drops in his 30's, they gotta go. Even if they're a stud team leader like Jonathan Allen.

Yeah they've both been playing a ton of snaps last few years, eventually that is going to catch up to them.

In the end Newton was just too good to pass up regardless of need.

Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread

I don’t think he is going to sit either. But it scares me because of our tackles that’s all. Center and G’s Im better with than last year certainly. Our T’s scare the hell out of me.

If the line implodes early and JD is getting knocked around I cant imagine a scenario like last year where we let it happen

I get the concern for sure.

However, last year we were last in the league in percentage of rushing plays, which was pathetic considering we were 7th in the league in yards per rush attempt. EB was a moron...

Our Tackles were left on an island consistently last year, given no help - expected to pass block almost 70% of every game for a QB who couldn't get rid of the ball.

A more balanced attack, a TE who can block and catch, along with the legit threat of a QB who can take it to the house will almost certainly help the O-line, especially the tackles.

Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread

I put most of the blame last year on EB's pathetic schemes and his unwillingness to run the ball, and SH for being inexperienced and just an overall slow and indecisive processor in the pocket.
