I think Gibbs' influence on myself & other fans was so deep that it brought back our concept of who the redskins are, in that you could actually associate players & coaches w/the team again. Between 2000-2004, this team's identity was no identity, players & coaches came & went. In that climate, hiring Fassel, an ex-giant, would've not been a big deal. Now, we've actually tasted some continuity & feel like we have a team, so not hiring GW was viewed so negatively. Like some others have posted, I believe that not hiring GW was the real reason behind the fan reaction more than anit-fassel feelings. |

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
I don't have a link yet - but SYNDER IS NOW INTERVIEWING THE ADE FOR HEAD COACH.
So far, public support of this former Redskins superstar has been fantastic. Let's compare him against his competition: 1) Experience. The Ade was the most recent candidate to play in the league. He knows the players, the rules, and the tricks of the trade. 2) Nickname. The Ade edges out Mooch, Fossil, and Spags. 3) Player Impact. Everyone knows that coaches are WAY out of touch with the players these days. The Ade knows how to play all of the video games, knows all the rap songs and knows where all the good strip clubs are. He'll be there at 4AM to drive their drunk asses home so they don't get a DUI. Fossil? He'll be in bed by 9PM. 4) Asst. Coaches. All the other coaches are whining and moaning about how Synder already put the Assistant Coaches in place so they don't get to pick. The Ade could give a crap. 5) $$. The Ade is willing to be Head Coach for $50/season. The difference can be invested in a new Ferris Wheel at 6 flags. |

I agree, and said the exact same thing in a previous post. When the list of coaches was compiled [notwithstanding the return of Gibbs] Jim Fassels' name was atop the list. The backlash directed towards Fassel I do not believe to be personal, but in retaliation to Williams not being given the job. |

Let's avoid the hyperbole.

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
Fassel is the only one that makes sense now. Probably the only one that made sense from the time that they installed the staff (the Mariucci connections notwithstanding). I'd say, if you wanted to be fair about the whole thing, a Fassel hiring actually reflects well on Dan Snyder.

Just to add I think we need to give some credit to Snyder and Cerrato. Initially Snyder said he was going to be patient and go through the process. There was a list of candidates, and they worked diligently through that list even though it meant waiting until the Super Bowl was over. Multiple candiates were interviewed multiple times. Yes they went about things a little strange by hiring the assistants first, but from all accounts the strongest candidates had rubber stamped the moves. Fassel was very close to the job in 2004, so obviously there's already a good relationship there. I won't have a problem with hiring him at all. We seem to have a solid staff around him and that's really the most important part. |

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
Looks like we've got our man who won't mind being fired next year when Bill Cower becomes available.
Good luck on your job security Fassel. Hometown fans don't want you and Snyder covets a coach who is unavailable until next year. You're just the man for the job.

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
IMO after week two of this season Spags was writting his ticket out of NY. So he got hot over the past six weeks and won the SB, that doesn't mean he is going to be a great HC or even a great DC. He had one great year. IMO I would rather have GW as a DC then Spags he has better record in the long run.

I'm inclined to agree, and sometimes we as fans only remember one's latest successes' or failures, and forget what happened in between. If I had to make a choice between Spagnuolo and Williams, it would be Williams by a landslide. Let's see how much Spagnuolo will be in demand at the completion of his new three year deal in NY. |

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
I think it's funny when people say, "ohhh, the Giants had some awful games, Spags is overrated, their D really wasn't that good, ra ra ra." It was his first year w/ the Giants. He had to implement a new system, and as the season went on their D stepped up HUGE.
That said, I don't really think Spags ever had any intention of leaving the Giants this year anyway. They have a ton of young up and coming players on that team via excellent drafting, they just won a Super Bowl, Coughlin and the rest of the staff is staying intact... Why leave? IMO he interviewed w/ the Skins just to make sure the Giants opened up their wallet. And they did. He's now the highest paid coordinator in football. If you just won a Super Bowl, have an excellent team coming back next year, and you can get head coach $$ as a coordinator, why leave?
