Re: Orakpo 2009 Defensive rookie of the and pro bowler

Orakpo definately should get consideration for DROY but the pro-bowl may be a stretch because of flex positions. Would he be a pro-bowler at LB/or DE? Carter is enjoying a fine year but is not a pro-bowl caliber player. Fletcher is long overdue and should be invited. Haynesworth I'm skeptical about because of his rather up and down season. He's only played approx 60% of the defensive snaps and has missed a lot of time. At times he's played up to the status, but has it been enough?

2 forced fumbles for Matthews as well (1 for Orakpo). Either way, I didn't say Matthews would get it, just that he'll definitely be strongly considered

Unfortunately, I think Jarius Byrd is going to get the nod for DROY. He's leading the league with 9 picks and got a lot of attention early in the season, with some going so far as to say he was a "lock" to get the award midway through the season. Orakpo is a beast and I would love to see him get the award, but I don't think it will happen. He could make the Pro Bowl, but I think it will be an uphill climb as well because he plays a hybrid position.

Carter and Haynesworth have decent shots at making the Pro Bowl, but I think Fletcher is going to get the shaft. You usually have to have name-recognition to make the Pro Bowl and, as good as Fletcher is, he doesn't have a lot of name-recognition. Plus, he's going up against Jon Beason and Patrick Willis.

No surprises here. Redskins have always been adept at drafting pro bowl defensive players. Orakpo is continuing the tradition. Only if we could draft offensive players that are half as good as our defensive draft picks.

yeah and so will cushing 112 tackles 2.5 sacks 2 forced fumbles 3 int's and he is a true olb not a hybrid like orakpo

if orakpo would have been on the line this whole season he would have a better shot, i think he really needs and int since he is considered our olb, and to continue the sack count

Brian needs 15 sacks to guarantee his pro-bowl spot and get the nod for ROTY.

Don't know what you mean by up and down season, besides missing a few games he has played at a pro bowl level all year.

I think right now Matthews is getting all the attention so it would seem he's the front runner. If Orakpo can have another big game on monday though, things can change real fast.

Re: Orakpo 2009 Defensive rookie of the and pro bowler

If I had a vote, I'd probably go

Orakpo
Byrd
Cushing
Matthews

Of course I'm biased. I gotta say, 9 INTs is really impressive. More so than 11 sacks through 13 games.

Orakpo has three games in front of him that all have huge playoff implications for the opponents, and they will draw national attention. He has a chance to get after Eli Manning, Tony Romo, and Philip Rivers on consecutive weeks. If he does, he could easily take home DROY.

Re: Orakpo 2009 Defensive rookie of the and pro bowler

Peter King definitley noticed Orakpo:

Defensive Player of the Week

Brian Orakpo, OLB, Washington.

Who'd have thought Orakpo would have rushed the pass more productively in the first 13 games of his rookie year than Demarcus Ware, Julius Peppers and LaMarr Woodley? By the measure of sacks, he has. His four-sack day at Oakland (sacks for losses of nine, nine, nine and 10 yards) gave him 11 for the year.

Jairus Byrd was just put on IR...which certainly helps Orakpo's hopes
