Re: Around the NFL Week 7

^great post on the ACLs. I don't remember people tearing their ACLs so much in the 1970s-80s and early 90's. Wonder why it's like that now.

As a reminder, the anterior cruciate ligament is one of four main ligaments in the knee. There are other important ligaments, such as the LCL — injuries to which are not listed here but have also ended the seasons of players like Brian Cushing.

thats crazy

Athletes are muscularly bigger, stronger and faster while the ligaments are the same size. Basically the torque and other biomechanic activities of athletes are too much for the smaller components of our body that we can't strengthen.

Ligaments do strenghten as a person works out.

Re: Around the NFL Week 7

I'd be interested to see a comparison of ACL injuries today vs 20-30 years ago. Does it really happen more often or is it a case of people having short memories.

Remember back in the day astroturf caused a lot of knee injuries. Anyone else remember when a receiver for the Bears blew out both his knees on one play in Philly?

Terry Allen had multiple ACL tears, Gayle Sayers career was cut short because of knee injuries, etc.

I think it would also be interesting to see how the new targeting rules are affecting knee injuries. And how limited practices are affecting how often players are getting hurt.

Good point.

As for Meriweather, I have a feeling his suspension will be reduced to 1 game. Just a guess

Yeah no. The muscles around the joints can strengthen to some degree and provide static stability. But the strengthening also puts more stress on the ligaments in flex (dynamic) positions. Connective tissue does not develop. It exists and degrades with age.

Does anyone know if there is any validity to davis being on the trading block? Everyone is just rehashing a Florio "report" and his reporting is often suspect.

Florio is sometimes a little loose with stuff. It could be that it has been discussed internally, Davis' agent is pushing the idea, or other teams have called. To Florio, who sometimes seems a little to agenda-driven to me, that all translates to "Skins want to trade Davis"
