Riggins, Monk, Theismann, Green etc. don't play anymore. In time RG3 will be gone.

So what keeps you a fan, just being a local? What if they moved to another city and another team started up in DC? Who are you rooting for?
When i was about five years old my mother bought me and my brother to the mall for winter jackets. It was all the nfl teams. Those letterman jackets with the team patch on the front and the pleather sleeves. Remember those? Anyway i spun that clothes rack around and looked at everyone. I picked the redskins because i liked the colors and i loved that indian. (Native american - lol).

I'm a Skins fan because they're local and because they've always been a family team. At this point if they moved somewhere else I would still be a fan just because I've been a hardcore Redskins fan for the past 8 years. But for me its all about being local, hence why I'm an O's, Nats, Caps and Wizards fan. So a little part of me in terms of fandom would be gone for good.

There are some teams I like just because of the fan base and history though, such as the Raiders in football and the Red Sox in baseball.

But I'll always root for the home team first.

I moved from Rockville, Maryland to the West Coast 30 years ago, what keeps me a fan? The tradition, history, uniform, the team is like my family, identity. You take that away, you might as well root for no one.

Yup. You could swap our players with the dirty rotten cowboys tomorrow and once they put on the b and g they become my team. Granted this particular example would take some adjusting to, but I am rite with you. Take away that emblem, those colors, and that name and you take away everything.

Re: Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change

I think most people get hooked on their local team as a kid since they are close and easy to follow and that tie is difficult to cut because of the local connection.

If there is no local team it seems like kids gravitate to a team that is good at the time. I suspect a lot of non-DC people who are Skins fans grew up in the 80s when the Skins were a force and on tv a lot. IMO that is a much easier bond to break. I can see those fans going elsewhere since its not like the Skins are a perennial powerhouse that is easy to root for.

I didn't grow up in the DC area, but I grew up in the southern part of VA, where the 'skins were always on TV and that's still pretty much true today. And yes, it did help that I got to grow up during the 80's when the 'skins were contenders year in and year out, but that bond is definitely not easy for me to break today. I would have a very tough time seeing the name 'Redskins' changed to something completely different. If they changed the name to the Generals or the Federals, I'd almost feel like our team is being transformed into that team that always gets beat by the Harlem Globetrotters, lol!

I completely disagree. If you are a true fan of any team than there is a bond. If you can easily go root for another team than there was no bond.

True enough, if there was not a bond and you lived in another city, chances are you would already be routing for the other team.......
