Well I mean there are a few guys that stick around and have long sucessful careers but what what I've seen kickers can fall from grace pretty quickly. Take Mike Vanderjagt for instance. He was one of the best kickers in the league. Misses one field goal in the postseason (on top of a drunk comment on TV) and gets released. Tries out for Dallas and gets replaced near the end of the season. Never heard from again in the NFL.

And I mean not only did he fall from grace but his last year in the league was simply brutal.

Quote:
Vanderjagt suffered a groin injury that kept him out of action for two weeks. He returned in the final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. In that game, he missed two field goals in overtime of 32 and 33 yards (both misses were wide right), forcing the game to end in a tie. Rumors quickly spread that Vanderjagt would be released by the Cowboys before the regular season began. However, he remained with the team. He was replaced by back-up kicker Shaun Suisham in the first game of the season against Jacksonville, but appeared in each of the Cowboys' subsequent games through Week 12. In Week 9, his potential game-winning field goal was blocked by the Washington Redskins as time expired. In Week 11 against his former team, the Colts, he missed his only two field goal attempts, (both of these misses were also wide right) making it the first time since 2001 since he had done so. The fans were so upset, they booed a commercial he appeared in on stadium monitors. On November 27, 2006, Vanderjagt was released by the Cowboys and replaced by Martín Gramática.
[edit]
But to reiterate yeah there are definitely a handful of quality kickers that stay on top for a good while. But for every Adam Vinitari it feels like there are 3 or 4 Neil Rackers.

Just like David Akers? Cundiff is not better than Gano, read this:

Excellent post.

This is what scares me, we don't need a Tony Romo of a kicker. The consistency is good but the first time he misses a kick with the game on the line, we'll all be calling for his head.

Gano is a good kicker but he's not great. Cundiff has more experience. Cundiff has kicked in playoff games and Gano hasn't. I was surprised to see Gano cut and I don't think Cundiff is truly an upgrade. Based on that statistics pertaining to that article, it appears that Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan are very naive in just cutting Gano and presenting the kicking job to Cundiff as a gift.

Might have a point there. On the other hand Cundiff probably had a few suitors and the only way to get him was to guarantee him the job. Plus maybe the staff thought they could sign Rackers or Gano mid season if Cundiff failed.

Ole Cundiff might not be our first week starter either..

Spin: Novak is kicking well, but unfortunately for him, Nate Kaeding is healthy and is also kicking well. It seems unlikely that the Bolts will elect to keep both kickers on the roster when the season begins, so Novak might be auditioning for another team at this point.
I'd take Nick back. That game-winner against Dallas is still fresh in my memory.

Of course, Troy Vincent and Sean Taylor helped out with that FG.

Funny as it may, it's not even that I'm a huge Gano supporter, but I just don't like blaming people for things they can't control (blocked kicks) or when the talent they bring in is not really any better. My issues still center around the ST coach.

Gano's development was stunted by the lack of a Red Snapper on the roster.

word, I think Danny has done a decent job...his punt/kick coverages are very solid, I dont think he has had great kickers or punters talent wise to work with in his tenure. Id say he has had below average returners as well. I still think Banks can be special, even after last year. Sav is the best punter we've had in a long time and last year had a really good year.

Cundiff is the right choice in my opinion because of his consistancy within 45 yards. 3 points in our offense is extremely important and we need something we can count on.

Cundiff=Suisham

Shanahan will find out real quick when Cundiff can't make 50 yard or longer FG which Gano could.
