Notifications
Perhaps the mods have explored the option, but have we considered having real time notifications on the forum? I think its a part of vBulletin. Notifications popup on the bottom right hand side, in real time, similar to Outlook Inbox message notification.
Notifications show for replies to posts, replies to your threads, and can be customized to alert a user on a when a thread they are interested in is created. Also when you access the site all your notifications will begin to display in the bottom right corner, and can be viewed in detail from a notifications page under the user cp. Slickdeals does it, and I think it's pretty cool.

Re: Notifications
Haha, poor first.
But seriously, it's very clean and simple. I think they can be turned off too. Anyone else been on a forum which has this? I am trying to find a link about it.

Re: Notifications
I'm not familiar with what you're talking about. It's not a built in feature here, at least not on the version of vbulletin we're running.

Re: Notifications
See above. I have my notifications set so I get a warning every time a thread with the text "xbox" is created. I can set it up so I get an email too. Also will get those notifications when someone replies to a post of mine. They disappear after a bit.

Re: Notifications
I seem to remember a few years ago we had a feature on this board where there was a small pop-up notifying us when there were new posts on the thread you were currently viewing. Not an auto-refresh, but something to let you know to hit the refresh button.

Re: Notifications
Slickdeals is not only a highly modified community but one that relies heavily on custom modification to fit their needs. With the current versions of vBulletin it is no longer easy to query responses/quotes and the like. Fortunately for us the board is not busy enough to where you can lose a ton of stuff from just daily posting. The thread subscription options should do most of what you would like, perhaps there are plugins which change the delivery of subscription notices but otherwise most are done by e-mail.
