Seems to have worked just fine for the Patriots and Giants in modern football. But of course, you absolutely turn a blind eye toward what else I said - which is a coach that players respect and WANT to play for. Nice try but you failed again.

Now look who's trying to put words in who's mouth? Again, I never said anything about sleeping in the office - you are the one who brought that up. I merely was saying that I want a coach who's willing to put in the time it takes to make this team successful - a perfectionist like Bill Walsh - someone who's going to take pride in being a Redskins head coach. If he can do all that by 8pm every night, great. But my point is, and obviously you cannot read context clues, is that I want a coach who is not going to put in minimal effort. I want maximum effort out of the coach. That is all I meant when I said a coach who's willing to put in long hours at Redskins Park - because it's going to take a heck of an effort to build this team into a constant winner.

During that time I was a bar manager ( in my mid 20's) and we had a show that booked Redskins every Monday during the season. Ray Brown was one of nicest guys you'd ever want to meet....so was Andre Collins. Gibbs and the guys on offense would stay til.."the wee hours" of the morning"...as you like to put it.
And this is where I'm calling you out on. Because in 1992, Richie was still the defensive coordinator - HE WAS NOT THE FREAKIN' HEAD COACH! I wouldn't expect Petitbon to put in the long hours that Gibbs did. GIBBS DID BECAUSE HE WAS THE HEAD COACH. What part of this do you not comprehend? And secondly, OK, 1993 - Richie Petitbon was head coach. Didn't put in the long hours? Look what the record was in 1993 - 4-12. Richie Petitbon was fired. In 1994, no more Gibbs and Richie Petitbon. So your example proves more of my point than it does yours.

No it wasn't. 1992 was the year after the 'skins last Super Bowl run and they barely made it into the playoffs. 1993, the team was 4-12. 1994, Norv Turner was hired. You have not proved your point at all. Thanks for making it easy in proving mine.

Your grape vine and mine:

Baylor could be bracing for a Redskins rush on Art Briles | ProFootballTalk

Absent a chance to scrutinize the new Briles contract, it may not matter. College coaches continue to leave for other colleges and NFL teams despite having long-term contracts in place. For now, the announcement of a new deal may be nothing more than a way to deal with questions Briles is getting from recruits about whether he’ll be leaving.

Briles doesn't have a traditional playbook, but they put everything on an iPad and label and number the plays.

i wouldnt mind bringing Briles in, but he cant run everything on his own. We would need a strong d cordinator, someone who can bring him along. Someone who is known and respected in the lockeroom. We are losing alot vets and leadership out of the lockeroom this year.

If we brought Briles with a weak staff, I have no doubt it would be another Spurrier epic fail.

If there is any question or concern that the head coach would not be strong enough to be respected and looked upon as a disciplinarian, then this franchise doesn't need him. The coordinators can't appear to have more respect than the head coach. That's a setup for failure every time. A coach like Belichick, Gibbs, Parcells, or Schottenheimer succeeds/have succeeded because they are disciplinarians. It is clear who's in charge.

I'd let Briles run his offense. It's what made RG3 famous. However, you right we would need a strong OC to be able to point out what will work and what won't, not a yes man.

This passage from that article is pretty much all I needed to see to cement in my mind that Briles would flop at the pro level.

"We don't put too much pressure on quarterbacks to have to make reads and decipher defenses," said Kendal Briles, Baylor's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. "We allow them to be comfortable and know where the ball should go in coverage instead of having to read a lot of things before a play. They're not having to read a lot of things on the run."

Art Briles said the less a quarterback has to think, the faster he can play.

"I think we're a little unique in that we do that," he said. "We try to ease the load on the quarterback. I've always felt like that guy has enough stuff going on without trying to slow him down. I'd rather free him up and let him play fast. He's got a lot on him already."

This also supports what John Keim has said repeatedly, that RG3 wasn't nearly as refined of a passer than some of his peers coming out of college who were in more 'pro-style' offenses and had to read pre-snap and post-snap coverages at the college level. He's clearly smart enough to get there and with a full offseason of reps and prep I'd anticipate a nice leap next year in his passing abilities, Briles would be a detriment to his development.

Sure he would flop if he took that same approach in the NFL. I would guess he's smarter than that.

A lot of this just comes down to coaching in college vs the pros. There's a lot of stuff you can get away with in college.

So Smoot, you were mentioning the musical chairs that seems to be happening in the Front Office - do you not expect A.J. Smith to be considered as the general manager? Do you feel it's going to be someone completely different? Do you have your ideas who those candidates are for this job? Will it be more of a promotion within or an outsider deal?
