Good question. That's when we turn to our handy-dandy little list compiled by Matty as the top free agent linebacker prospects in 2007 guide. And here they are:

Lance Briggs, UFA, Chicago Bears (gone - franchised, I think)
Na'il Diggs, UFA, Carolina Panthers
Cato June, UFA, Indianapolis Colts
Adalius Thomas, UFA, Baltimore Ravens (not happening, too pricey)
London Fletcher UFA Buffalo Bills (our best bet)
Chase Blackburn, ERFA, New York Giants
Chad Brown, UFA, Pittsburgh Steelers
James Darling, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
Randall Godfrey, UFA, San Diego Chargers
Kawika Mitchell, UFA, Kansas City Chiefs
Rob Morris, UFA, Indianapolis Colts

Out of that list, if L. Fletcher is gone, I wouldnt mind seeing C. June come aboard...

Re: NFL Live

Dre Bly is a good player. He went to the Pro Bowl two years ago, didn't he? Also, he's had 6 interceptions for 3 seasons out of 8 -- and at least 3 in all but one (2). He's getting old, but maybe that's good reason for a modest contract.

I'd be happy to get him, for a reasonable price.

Re: NFL Live

I'm not sure if I agree with siging two 30 year old FAs. I feel that this is going to lead to problems a few years from now. How many productive years do you think we'll get out of Bly and Fletcher? And, IMO, with each year their production is going to drop off.
It seems to me that once again we're diggin ourselves a hole. If we sign Bly we're going to have two old CBs in him and Springs. When they can't play anymore, we're going to be faced with the same problem of not having a good corner.
In addition, Fletcher is also getting old, and Marcus Washington is going to be 30 soon as well. Once again, we're going to be facing the problem a few years down the road of having too many old players whose productio is dropping off, instead of a young guys who are coming into their prime. In addition, our defensive line is getting old.
I think we should only sign one of these guys. Then we should try to sign some young guys who we can develop or fill these positions in the draft.

Re: NFL Live

I've gotta say that the move for Fletcher makes sense even though he's old because there's no one else on the FA market who plays MLB as well, we don't have the draft picks to draft a MLB, and we need a new MLB.

But I will be really pissed if we get another old defensive player. Absolutely everyone knows that our defense is aging fast and needs an infusion of youth. We have maybe five young defensive players in Rogers, Taylor, Golston, Carter, and McIntosh with any promise and not one of them has developed into a true stud. If our defense totally collapses in a year or so, the coaching staff will have no one to blame but themselves.

well, our dead cap and stupid signings have already severely limited the skins buying power this offseason, and over the next few years it's probably going to be worse anyways.

But at least we're not in "cap hell".

I wouldn't say we're in cap hell. I would say, however, that other teams are in much better cap shape and our cap situation is limiting our ability to compete with quality free agents at positions of need (e.g., CB). So far, the only cap casualty of note has been Pierce who wasn't cut, but couldn't be resigned due to cap considerations. Springs, Daniels, Wynn and a few others might be cap casualties, but they're getting old anyways.

While we're not in cap hell, our cap situation is definately going to limit our options in the future. Most likely, we'll be forced to rely more on the draft over the next few years. Maybe that's a good thing.

Re: NFL Live

I agree that young players are generally better. However, we don't have draft picks. We won't be able to add young talent until next year (as long as we keep our picks).

That is why we must sign old(er) players now, if we are going to sign anybody this year. It's all about the contract. I couldn't care less if a guy is old, as long as we don't sign him to a long term deal. We must be reasonable. If we overpay for anyone, it should be somebody young with lots of promise.

I wouldn't be opposed to signing Fletcher and Bly for no more than 3 year deals at a reasonable price for their age and skill level.

Agreed.

Unless we trade down for additional picks our draft is very limited this year so we'll have to address most of our needs in free agency. We just need to be smarter about who we go after.

Re: NFL Live

If there's any truth to this, the team obviously is looking for a replacement for Springs, or at least planning in case they can't restructure his deal.

Re: NFL Live

I would take Bly and Smoot over Clements in a heart beat... Bly in the past has been regarded as the 2nd best corner in the league. but I hope this doesn't involve the Portis-bly trade

Smoot/Bly could definitely happen, but there are some "IF's" that need to go our way. According to the Wash Post, many in our organization would be "open to bringing Smoot back" if he is released by the Vikes this week (which apparently is more likely to happen than not). The other "IF" is IF Bly, who has been given permission from Detroit to seek a trade, looks to come to DC, what will Detroit want from us? We don't have any depth on defense to give away, and we sure don't have any draft picks to part with (not this year anyway). I really don't want to give them Portis. If we do, we need to get a high draft pick in addition to Bly.

The other possibility is we move Springs to safety to play next to Taylor (provided Springs' restructures, and talks aren't going well). If we could bring in Smoot and/or Bly, that would be a pretty solid secondary...

I just read that John Clayton is doubtful that Matt Millen can turn Dre Bly into anything other than a middle round pick. That's music to my ears!!! I'd give up a 3rd or 4th round pick for a player who is top 5 at his position, under 30 years old, and fills a pressing need. I hope Clayton is right.
