"I've proven I can start in one of the toughest divisions in football," Evans said this week. "I don't want to be a backup anymore. I started in 2005 at tackle when Cornelius [Griffin] was hurt, and I started at end when Phillip [Daniels] was hurt in 2004 and again last year. I want to stay in Washington, but I want to be a starter."

Sounds like he's saying he wants to start

Reading between the lines, I would say that he wants to be paid like a starter. Not sure whether he's worth that kind of commitment, unless we're talking low-end starter money.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

Evans is solid, and I think it might just be semantics to get into starter v. 2nd string, cause he can play dt & de, so he might get more snaps than a starter in some games even if he's a backup. He can get a lot of time at dt in the nickel.

I think it's a good year to re-sign him, there shouldn't be too much $ out there in the market & he's not the pass rusher that teams look for & pay big $. I could see him getting a 4 year deal w/a bonus no more than 4-5$ mil.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

Well, you can go look at my comment in the D-line thread. If we are looking to keep status quo then let him go. If we are looking to get younger then kick the older guys to the curb and sign Evans to replace one of them. Either way I get the feeling from some of the more knowledgable that keeping him or letting him go is status quo also. So I guess if all depends on if we want to get younger or not. If he's looking for the payday like Pierce got as a General of the defense or like Buffalo paid our O-Lineman then let him go. If he's simply looking for a few more dollars then last year then sign him. If he truly believed this team was going somewhere why would he want to miss out on a ring?

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

When did he actually say start me or lose me. He said he wants to stay in Washington, but he also wants to be a starter. And the two may not be compatible

Exactly, basically he said it by inference.

I don't think so, because he could end up deciding that staying in Washington is his best option even if it's not as a starter. Either way, I don't think it's a threat. The guy is a free agent and he's free to pursue what it's in his best interests. Just like if the Redskins let him walk they're doing what they feel are in their best interests.

Could be Daniels, or Taylor if he is brought back.

I know... not great options, which makes bringing back Evans pretty important if you ask me.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

Looking at our roster, Evans is without question the 2nd best DE we have. He's also the 3rd best DT we have. If we let Evans go, who would we replace him with? According to the Times article, it seems like Evans will be the 2nd best free agent DE on the market. So, if we let Evans go, then the only place we can look to upgrade the position is the draft. If we let Evans go, the only way we can potentially upgrade the position is by using our 1st round pick on a DE like Orakpo or Maybin.

Personally, i dont want to be "locked in" to having to draft a DE with our first pick... especially considering we have few picks and multiple needs on both lines. Unless Evans is looking for some obscene amount of money, we need to resign him before free agency begins. Considering how much cap room teams have and the "slim pickings" at DE available in free agency, Evans could very well be "overpaid" by another team if he hits the market.

Evans has said he wants to start and he wants starter money... but starters accross the league make varying amounts of money. I certainly think Evans is worth a contract paying up to 1.5M/year on average. I certainly would be appauled if we let Evans go and kept Daniels or Taylor. Letting both go saves us over 10M next year... which is more than enough to resign Evans and either Monty or Golston, if not all three. Doing so would give us greater flexibility in the draft and keep the nucleus of a top 4 defense in tact. Even with the same front 4 as last year (Carter/Griffin/Monty/Evans), we should be able to put more pressure on the QB if we upgrade the LB position. Washingtons constant injuries last year forced us to play the diminuitive HB Blades at OLB which really hurt us. We certainly need to upgrade our defensive line, but getting a bigger OLB to replace washington would be easier to find in free agency (and probably cheaper too). IMO DE is a position we can afford to delay another year. if we make the right moves at other positions this year, DE, DT, and probably QB will be the only positions we need really need to worry about in 2010.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me

Thing is Evans' greatest value is probably not as a starter anyway. As BHA points out, the guy is versatile enough to play both DE and DT. He's a versatile backup who can slide into multiple positions when asked.

What makes Evans a backup rather than a starter in your opinion. Going into 09'

Apparently that's what Evans wants to know.

Well he only made 869,000 last year. 1.5 might get him to sign and he's definitely worth that. I think Daniels makes 2 mil.
