Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
Simple answer:
Make a big FA pickup at WR- $$$ - Galloway, Robinson or similar We only Move up in the draft to get a top QB - my guess is a big trade to get into the top 10 in the draft to get the fourth or fifth QB. Anything higher (top 2 or 3 QB ) is too insane a price, as is the trade for Watson. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What are we saving our FA money for this season? Except for QB, the biggest hole is at WR. In fact, we need a excellent or outstanding WR to balance McLaurin, as well as more Depth below those two. Cam Sims is really the only credible WR on the team below McLaurin. Steve Sims will be let go. Harmon will be back but how good is he really? FA will INSTANTLY solve the WR black hole. I bet we will use our FA piggy bank to fix WR, WR and LB. Last year Rivera went for Cooper with the big bucks in FA. I believe he will do the same again this season, except he will get his man. To trade up to draft our franchise QB, we will lose some of our draft picks like the third rounder you talk about. After we draft our QB, the remaining draft picks will go for the OL, where we need youth, depth and quality. I would be surprised if the team picks up anyone in FA who is over 30. We aren't drowning in cap money. Cap is about $180, we have a cap of $140-$150 depending whose numbers you believe. That's AFTER cutting Smith. $30M. $4-8M of that for rookie pool. Resign Scherff $15M+ a year? All the sudden not room to sign a stud WR, though I'd love to. You could resign Scherff and a FA WR for low 1st-year cap numbers, but then you might have to start letting our 1st round FAs walk as there rookie deals expire because later cap numbers huge. But I agree, getting a stud WR could be sensible. The perennial contenders get their big-five players all on rookie deals. Also, keep in mind, the guys we just replaced Smith with probably won't draft as well, based on track records. |

You’re right! I did not say the “over 30” FA statement correctly. No LONG-Term FA deals (like Snyder did) for guys over 30. Obviously short term 1 or 2 year deals are great. The best thing about Rivera and this teams fast turn around is that players will be flocking here to play on a good team VERSUS “just coming here to get OVER- PAID”. Like the typical Dan Snyder deals. Cap room is about 6th in the NFL. Some of it is predicated on dropping Alex Smith. Got to gently cut those strings. Not insane money in cap but certainly enough to get Galloway or in his league. In the draft, I think we will trade up enough to get the 3-5th QB taken. That will be expensive! Long-shot is trading to Miami for Tua if THE “Fins” get Watson.

Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
To be fair, for every McLaurin there is a Taylor Jacobs, same with 1st rounders, for every Justin Jefferson, there is a Josh Doctson

5 high leverage positions: QB,LT,Edge,WR,CB. We have Edge covered. No stud FA young LTs or CBs available. Nor QBs obviously. I don't like overpaying, but if a true stud #1 WR available, in his prime, I think you pay just because it is a high-leverage position and you have so many others to fill. Then you focus on primarily building through draft with rest. Problem is we then have to extend McL, and we then have a roster really have capwise on DL and WR. You'd have to crunch the cap numbers to see if viable. Have to cut Smith, his cap savings can almost pay a new WR. I think we have several "3rd rounder" guys all failing to contribute, for various reasons. Even if we signed WR, we still need QB,LT,CB,FS,MLB in draft. Every third rounder isn't going to be some 1st round gem. Yes, I would prefer to draft and primarily develop, and we should continue with this approach, but given all our needs, and the fact that LOTS of stud WRs in FA, I might bite. It would depend on how good a player at how good a price. Whoever we sign has to have some size. Can't have two smurfs. |

Unfortunately the draft isn’t that easy.
