Ok my understanding of Poison pill contracts is pretty much based on the corporate world, so I went to wikkipedia and read up on the poison pill contract idea in the Sports World and if I read it correctly these contracts are used to make sure that one player can not sign with other specific teams in a contract matching situation (e.g. if we were trying to sign Peyton Manning and the Colts had to match the contract we could put a clause in the contract stating that if Peyton Manning plays X number of games in any given year in the state of Indiana then the whole contract becomes guaranteed), that is what I got from it at least. So thats not going to help us out at all.....just plain Poison however may be useful!

If I remember right a player gets the average salary of the top 10 players at his position (rather then the top 5 you see with the franchise tag) and the cost of not matching an offer is a pair of second round picks.

Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011

These are all pretty meaningless now without free agency and a new CBA. I'm sure that a provision of the new agreement (whenever it happens) will be that all existing tags will be voided but most of those players will be 're-tagged' with whatever the new tags and terms are.

I'm not dead but this team is dead to me...but now that McCloughan is here they may have new life!

Kirk Cousins = Next Grossman

Do we even have anyone who is worth considering using a franchise or transition tag on?

Carlos is worth a consideration. I wouldnt at this point, would like a long term deal with him. Lotta teams are putting them on cause of the uncertainty of a lack of a CBA. Once that is done, the tag will be removed and long term contracts will be signed with some of these guys.

If we can keep him another year at a reasonable price, go for it. Better than paying him what he THINKS he's worth.

the past thinking is why pay our own? when we could go out get much worse players and then set the max threshold for the top 5 players in the market

Stephen Davis(?) comes to mind. Those were the good ol' days.

Dude If only we could rewind the time and bring back Johnson and Davis, I actually thought we were going to the Super Bowl in 99. If it wasn't for that Romo like botched snap I think we could have played with STL.

Franchise tag tenders wreck havoc on salary cap management. When you manage your cap like the Redskins do, you don't leave $15 million dollars lying around in free cap money to franchise a contributor for one season. Too much money to one player, particularly when you're rolling over $10-$15 million in dead cap every single season.
