CHIEFS “TERMINATE” DAVID MACKLIN
Posted by Mike Florio on March 18, 2009, 4:36 p.m.

The new Kansas City Chiefs don’t mess around.

Two players have been arrested since Scott Pioli became the G.M. And both players have been cut.

Or, in the case of cornerback David Macklin, terminated.

The release from the team bears the headline, “Chiefs Terminate CB David Macklin.”

The two-sentence statement reads as follows: “The Kansas City Chiefs terminated the contract of CB David Macklin on Wednesday. Macklin played in four games with the Chiefs in 2008.”

Macklin was busted five days ago for DUI.

Earlier in the offseason, tight end Michael Merritt was arrested for possession of marijuana. He was later released.

It remains to be seen whether the new-look NFLPA fights the decision to “terminate” Macklin. Under the substance abuse policy, the league has exclusive jurisdiction to discipline players for criminal charges arising from alcohol use or abuse. Thus, the union could choose to argue that the Chiefs were not permitted to take action of any kind against him.

Then again, the fact that the move came in the offseason greatly reduces Macklin’s potential losses. He played in only four games last season, and likely wasn’t a lock to make the 53-man roster.
Pioli is not screwing around. Good for the Chiefs.

Yes good move by KC, not that they lost much but anyway. It's a privilege to play in the NFL, act accordingly!

I will look for the local newspaper/online article about the DUI on Macklin. He was pulled over in Newport News on J. Clyde Morris Blvd. (Right down the road from my home and where he grew up) at like 3:10am for excessive tinted windows on a BWM luxury car. Then of course he just happened to be legally drunk.

Exactly, so many players just take it for granted like its no big deal. Hope Macklin learns to control his alcohol before getting behind the wheel.

No it's not, Bass Pro Shop is in Hampton. Not even close, his arrest occurred in Newport News up around the Casey Chevrolet/Riverside Hospital Area.

I don't see the big deal here, it's David Macklin. I guarantee he wouldn't have cut Jared Allen when he got his 19 DUI's.

No one's arguing that he wouldn't cut Allen, because he's a freakin Pro Prowler! The guy could knock a man out with a bat and he'd still be on the team. He's a great player MACKLIN ISN'T. My point is players that are bad football players like Macklin should not get DUI's, because they have a greater chance than (Allen) to get cut. Macklin shouldn't have put himself in that situation because he's almost assured to get cut.

Id bet that Macklin was going to get cut anyway and they were just doing this to set a tone for the younger players.

Macklin shouldn't haven been drinking and driving because he could of have ended up like Donte Stallworth...or Derek Thomas. That the worst thing that happened to him is he got cut by the Chiefs, he should consider himself blessed
