The preseason is way too long and needs to be changed. Its ridiculous that teams seem to already be scrambling because of injuries and the season hasn't started yet.

This is an 8-8 team. They start slow and spend most of the season trying to dig out of the hole they dug early.

Anybody other than me old enough to remember when preseason was 6 games long? I think that was a little over 40 years ago.

I don't remember that. I do know back then the players actually used camp and the preseason to get in shape because there weren't all the off season programs like now. Today players come to camp in shape and ready to play, training camp and the preseason are redundant now. My issue is all the preseason injuries, its ruining the product.

There weren't any off season programs because unless you were a marque player you had to have an off season job to support your family. Most people had 6 TV channels 40 years ago and cable was in it's infancy and only had deals with the local NBA and MLB teams.

I do. In those days, a lot of players held off-season jobs simply because they didn't make much, the average salary was 27,500. (for comparison, the average salary of a new college graduate was between 8K -12K).

Those were the days when there wasn't year round conditioning, OTA's, and 24/7 coverage even in the offseason. Training camp was when players got "conditioned." Now, the expectation is that you are preparing year-round are coming into camp at pro level physical condition. Plus, with all the OTA's, players should have already learned the scheme basics and camp is the time to fully implement the playbook.

Just a completely different game from back then. The huge influx of money into the league through mega-media deals changed the game completely.
