It doesn't matter who they get in a trade, that team isn't going anywhere anytime soon. They'd have to bring in Carmelo and LeBron just to make them competitive and even then they wouldn't have the bench to outlast teams like the Spurs/Thunder/Rockets.

For one, Kobe is killing their cap with that enormous contract (24m/yr) of his and there is absolutely no way around it unless those guys are going to take HUGE paycuts and still wouldn't have enough for quality role players. Lakers are going to be stuck until Kobe's contract is up.

Oh, I totally agree with you. But the new(ish) front office placates Kobe instead of making rational basketball decisions (as proven by that contract you mentioned).
