Sorry, but I have to disagree completely with your assertion here.

Safeties are the last line of defense; when/if they make a mistake, it often results in a TD for the other guys because there isn't anyone to cover for that mistake.

Having a safety that can hit hard is wonderful IF - - AND ONLY IF - - that same guy can cover WRs or TEs downfield when necessary. If he cannot and the WR is waltzing into the end zone for a TD, no one in the stadium or watching at home ought to give a flipping damn if that same safety can "knock a WR into next week."

Primary Duty for Safety: Never - - as in NEVER - - get beat deep.

Secondary duty for Safety: Be a sure tackler.

Tertiary Duty for Safety: "Intimidate" opposing pass receivers.
