Re: Washington Wizards 2010-2011 Ongoing Thread
Still as long as the dynasties are allowed to field teams with payrolls that are $30 million above the leagues "cap" the NBA will continue to be a joke. Sure Lakers-Celtics works out well for the Nationally Televised games but what about the 24 other teams that have little if any chance of competing for a championship year in and year out? The NBA is getting killed at the gate in small markets because fans don't feel like their teams have a chance.
In reality the Lakers and Celtics shouldn't even be smelling a championship. Kobe and Gasol go 5 for 20. Yet because of the ridiculous flexibility of the NBA cap the Lakers can still rely on Bynum, Odom, and Artest before having to worry about loosing to the Hornets. Remember the two years Kobe didn't have Gasol after Shaq left and his only low post player was a raw and developing Bynum? First year the Lakers didn't even make the playoffs. Then the next year they lost in the first round to the Suns, who if I remember correctly were under the damn cap.
The Heat are also a joke. They shouldn't be able to sign Lebron, Wade, and Bosh and then have even remotely effective role players, but thanks to the NBA soft cap they were able to keep Hasleem as well as a bunch of other role players.
The real contenders this year should be Chicago and Oklahoma City. And because of the number of players they have nearing contract years they should have to worry about keeping the team together.
This league is a joke. Unlike the NFL I'm looking forward to a lockout because unlike the NFL the NBA needs a fundamental overhaul. The NFL on the other hand is working on "fixing a system" that brings in $9 billion a year and at the very least gives every team hope.
