It's amazing how little info we had back then.
I'm putting two and two together and although they didn't say it, I guess some of Days of Thunder were based on Tim Richmond? Not all, but some similarities.
Anyone else see it?

Yes, I thought it was an excellent documentary on the late driver that died young at age 34 of AIDS. I fondly remember watching him drive back in the early-mid 80's and he was second only to Earnhardt Sr. in terms of brashness. Richmond was not the typical "good 'ol boy" from the south, which caused some friction behind the scenes. But, he added some additional excitement to the sport with his flashy personality and made no apologies for being the lady's man (which unfortunately cost him his life). The dude could wheel a race car too and was not afraid to put a bumper on big bad Dale Sr. Miss personalities like that in NASCAR very much. It used to be fun to watch but has now become controlled way too much by corp. America.
