QB is basically the only position where you want someone groomed and ready to go behind the starter. Portis or Betts can be replaced very easily, it's just not necessary to waste a roster spot on some guy who's likely to be inactive each week simply because he's young. Good RB's are a dime a dozen.

Agreed. I'll add WR and perhaps MLB to that list.
The point is: Mason is not competing with Rock. He's not going to move Rock anywhere. His shot is to move Betts out of the way so that he can be RB 2a. If he does that, then he's got a spot on the team. If Betts is just going to play over him anyway, then I don't see the upside everyone else does to keeping him.
