I love Coach Joe and thank him immensely for the success he had first time around and the respectability he had 2nd time around but this is 100% the wrong take. His 2nd time around he thought he could skip the whole "develop a young qb" thing by getting Brunell and that was one of his big downfalls. The game passed him by - offensive rules were getting made emphasizing pass interference/big plays/more scoring and the great teams of those days realized where the advantage was.
The NFL has been tilting the rules in favor of the offense for the last 20 years or so and Coach Joe thought he could still win with a veteran qb game manager and a strong running game. Those days are gone. Ball control will win games when you're playing quick-score offenses (good defense and strong running game will hold them in check) but it's not an effective strategy for winning 12 games and a title. The best teams have solid defenses and aggressive offenses that air it out (which is what the NFL wants).
