Re: Do we REALLY need a star DE?

guys...im sorry unfortunately i had to follow yesterdays game on NFL.com...so i didnt get to see who was playing.

Did taylor jacobs play yesterday???? And is he still our number 2 receiver?

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with Brunell's health this week...but to me the real test of knowing whether Jacobs has it...would be to give him the start this week if Brunell isnt ready to go and Ramsey gets the nod. I say this because i feel like brunell mostly looks to moss and cooley before the 2nd receiver...which doesnt leave much of an opportunity for our 2nd receivers to get the ball cause once hes gone through two progressions hes usually either found someone...or thrown the ball away.

Thus i think we really havnt seen what patten or jacobs is capable of...and if Ramsey gets the nod...id be interested to see if there would be a noticeable difference in jacobs contribution to the team.

If nothing else...it would tell us whether we actually need to go out and spend the money on another receiver...or whether we simply need to make a concerted effort to get more plays called for the 2nd receiver going into next season...for whoever our starting QB is.

With respect to a defensive end...i think the last couple of games what we've shown...is that we dont need a superstar. What we do need is depth. Guys who are good...and can rotate in and out...who can make plays, and who will be able to step up if another guy gows down. The problem a little earlier in the season...is that we really didnt have the depth we needed and so when salavea and griffen were banged up...noone was able to step in in their places.

I would be all for investing in an up and coming DE. Like the guy from Green Bay, Aaron Kampman. Or perhaps, kyle Vanden Bosch from Tenesse. He's had a great season...but prolly wont command too big a contract because he's had previous injury problems. These are guys that are just finishing their rookie contracts...and have shown steady improvement since entering the league...or have begun to realize their potential.

Anyway, the point is i would rather have guys like this...cause they fit the workmanlike mold of our team, and we wouldnt have to break the bank to get them. When you consider you could prolly get a good d-end, dtackle, and backup O-lineman...all for the price of a probowl defensive end...i really feel like its better to get a few guys who can all step up...and help you in different areas...then just place all your hopes in one guy.

Finally, my ideal offseason beyond the few choice free agent signings ive mentioned would see us getting marylands, vernon davis. The guy is going to be a ****ing monster. And if we had him and chris cooley in the game, plus our current offensive weapons...and a permanent solution at QB...i really think we could have one of the better offenses in the league!
