Why do we have to have a "window" of opportunity? Why can't we build a team that can sustain success for a long period of time? I'll tell you why. Because we are willing to mortgage THE FUTURE to get a QB.
Hell, just look at Detroit and Houston. Those teams have great QBs, right? Everyone wants one of those guys here. They throw for 4,000 plus yards every year, etc. However, did those teams make the playoffs? Nope, because they didn't have enough horses around their QBs, and their defenses were not good.
If we actually had a defense like TB, NO, LAR, then maybe I go all in on a QB. But we don't. We're not close.

Actually Stafford has passed for 5,000 and Watson almost got that this year. But you bring up a great point. We won a bad division w/ 7 wins, gave up 500 yards against TB. We are not close to competing for a SB. Keep building. Go get some more pieces w/ the draft and get a free agent or two.
I'd say we are closer than ever to being a contender.
