Re: NFL Free Agent Signings 2020

With way the Cowboys have structured the five-year, $100 million deal with Amari Cooper, they can be out of salary-cap issues after just two seasons. The first two years of the deal are fully guaranteed at $40 million. If the Cowboys want to move on after 2021, $6 million would hit the cap on signing bonus proration and they would save $16 million in cap room. The Cowboys' "win" in the deal is not having any guaranteed money into the third year.

Cooper should have spread the guaranteed money around vs front loading.

Why would a player even want guaranteed money up front, the team isnt going to cut you a year or 2 into the deal so that salary money is basically already guaranteed. Id want my guaranteed money on the back end when a team would consider cutting me.

Scenario A - he gets cut after 2 years, gets 46M total

Scenario B (guaranteed money is spread 10M over first 4 yrs) - he gets cut after 2 years, he gets 66M.
