Re: Going to Memphis

Until about a year ago I lived in Memphis for about 10 years.

Things to do:
  • Graceland- there are different tour types one includes all his cars/planes it was more expensive than I thought it would be; oh and it is not a good area of town anymore, don't stray
  • Beale street is touristy but fun, don't go during day hours though it is all about nights
  • Sun studios is an interesting tour you can take the trolley there from downtown or short drive
  • Farmers market on Saturday's at the train station- south main
  • The Peabody ducks: I don't know what the attraction to this was, but tourists line like crazy to see this; in the Peabody Hotel grand lobby
  • Stax Soul music museum
  • Gibson Guitar Factory tour
  • It is too late in the season for rooftop parties, but the Madison Hotel usually has their roof open. It is a great view of the city and river.
  • If you are in town Saturday the 11th, Cooper-Young Local Beerest- 2-3 dozen local breweries- one ticket all you can drink

BBQ:
  • BBQ: Ok most tourists go to Rendezvous (it is more well known) and it is not bad, but go early or you will wait in an alley for a table most nights
  • BBQ: But I liked central BBQ, in midtown, they added a downtown location off south main (BTW south main used to be the worst area in the city, but is coming back and there were a lot of cool little shops/ resturants in that area)

Breakfast:
  • Brother Juniper's -Midtown :homemade biscuits and breads
  • The Arcade -downtown(south main) Solid southern breakfast

Fine dining:
  • Iris - Midtown- Best chef in town
  • McEwens -Downtown- Never had a bad meal there
  • Folks Folly-East Memphis- best steak in town

Other food:
  • Second line - midtown- southern type food
  • Gus's world famous chicken- ok I wasn't that high on Gus's but the chicken is good the sides not that much. But people do flock(no pun intended) to this place
  • Trolley stop- Midtown- good for lunch they use a lot of local ingredients and even deliver
  • Cheesecake Corner- Downtown- desserts- Coffee

Good bars to chill in (off Beale):
  • Bardogs -downtown- food was solid too
  • Brass door-downtown- Irish pub type
  • Young Ave Deli-Midtown- food is just okay bar food- They often have live music and the 2nd best beer selection in town
  • Flying Saucer -downtown- best beer selection in town - Live music on the weekends

Hope that helps
