He watched plenty of film and got the mental reps, I don't think that was the issue. But when you can't practice what you're watching it doesn't do a ton of good.
I'm pretty sure the majority of his time was spent on rehab, just learning how to walk and run again and he wasn't going full speed and cutting hard until he got close to camp. Again, hard to work on mechanics under those circumstances. Nothing really simulates going full speed in a practice with no limitations.
