Springs Released
Per JLC
blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider Shawn Springs To Be Released Today (UPDATED) The Redskins have informed the veteran cornerback that he will be released from the final year of his contract, according to league sources. Springs, a free agent signing in 2004 and a Silver Spring native, will become an unrestricted free agent. The Redskins will save $6 million in cap space by letting him go - badly needed at this time after the huge signings of CB DeAngelo Hall and DT Albert Haynesworth - and Springs could garner interest from New England, Dallas and Baltimore, among others. The Redskins are still trying to re-sign G Derrick Dockery as well. UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Shawn, and he confirmed the news. He said he loved being a Redskin and his five seasons here, but understands the business side of things. "They did what's best for the team, and I'm happy for them," Springs said. "I'm going to miss my friends there, but as long as it makes the team better, I understand. I'm a true fan of the sport." Springs's departure means that of the free agent/trade class of 2004 - the first of the Joe Gibbs regime - only DT Cornelius Griffin and RB Clinton Portis remain (at least that I can think of; working on 90 minutes of sleep warps your brain). |

Re: Springs Released
Sayonara, Shawn. You were great when you were healthy, but I'd rather have your cap space than you this season.
Looks like we'll be able to get Dock on board now. Good. |
Re: Springs to be Released
Gmanc beat you by 1 minute. You guys are on it though. Props for that.

Re: Springs Released
Its one of those things. I hate to see ya go but. We need some room on the bus.

Re: Springs Released
Sorry to see him go. We were a better team when he played.

Re: Springs Released
Guess they didn't pull off any trade. Like I said, my source on that was very weak that's why I asked if anyone else heard it.
Springs got a bad rap here, I'll miss him. |
Re: Springs Released
Expected move. I'm curious to see where he ends up. (Dallas?)

Re: Springs Released
Skins were Smart here. If D. Hall signed somewhere else Springs was coming back. Now we got 9 years younger at Corner.

Re: Springs Released
Bye! And it's about time.

Re: Springs Released
Hopefully we can use his space for a talented OL and gain some more options with our 13th pick in the draft.

Re: Springs Released
I'm kinda sad to see Springs go but the writing was on the wall. He's too much money for the return we've been getting and like Marcus W. it looks like his body is starting to fail him. I wish him luck. I've met him personally on a few occasions and really like the guy.

Re: Springs Released
Springs was a baller when healthy, it just seemed that was a little too infrequent the past 3 years. Classy guy though, I'll bet he ends up in Dallas.

Re: Springs Released
ESPN980 just reported that Cerrato says Rogers will definitely be back AND we have room to make another FA signing and we are looking at offense now.

Re: Springs Released
Sad to see him go, but he needed to go. I hope he doesn't become a Cowboy though, that wouldn't just feel right, maybe he can be a Texan.
