Backup QB scenarios

Backup QB Situation Settled

Why is that?
Is Collins expected to finish the games b/c he is only worth time management and handing the ball off?
Is Campbell the more capable passer to start should Mark go down?

It seems like an odd equation to have backup QB's that would come in like that. It seems a bit backwards but if Jason gets to start it serves the aspect of experience to start, but wouldnt we assume Jason would be rattled jumping straight in? I guess they are not going to hold his hand, time to grow up and become a Skins-Man.

Re: Backup QB scenarios

I am sure that this scenario is NOT etched in stone. Joe said..."It's the way we will start things". That tells me that he does think that Jason is ready should he be needed and if MB for some reason would succomb to injury or play poorly JC will be the man.

i dont think he is ready he does not read defenses quick enough.

Your right. He isn't mentally there yet... but they feel he is smart enough to win games if they drill him for a week in practice.

Jason Campbell throws such a nice ball though! It gives me the chills.

none of us can really tell i would have loved to see what he had with our 1st team recievers. i gurantee he would have put up better numbers than the other 2 combined probably

Re: Backup QB scenarios

I think Joe is leaving himself some wiggle room when he does give Jason the reigns this year. Perhaps he wanted to approach things differently with the way the Ramsey thing went down a couple of years ago.

No, Jason may not have outplayed Todd this preseason, but I think they saw enough of him to say we feel comfortable with him starting a regular season game and then some. And it's equally important for the rest of team to know that from the on-set. I think it was a great way to say, hey we think you could have done better this preseason without rattling his confidence at the same time.

J.C. is way too slow in finding his keys. his arm is brilliant, but right now needs max protection in order to find a receiver

once he totally gets the offense he is going to be a beast for years to come

"It's a unique situation, one that Gibbs has never employed before."

How long has Gary Fitzgerald been covering the Redskins? This is the same system Gibbs used when Humphries and Rutledge were the back-ups to Rypien. If Rypien went out early in a game then Rutledge would take over. Given a week to prepare, Humphries would be the starter.

I'm getting old :(

You know drift I think you're right...
Is Gibbs foolin'?
Cause he don't lie.
Well maybe cause football and poker are similar.

Re: Backup QB scenarios

Collins, because of his familiarity with the playcalling, can step in with next to no repetitions and know every play, allowing Brunell to take as many reps as necessary. Given an extended absence, Campbell can take all the reps and be prepared.

Anyway, it seems like Collins has the best job ever. Almost no practicing, only plays when no one else can.

This whole thing smells like a compromise between JG and AS.

Re: Backup QB scenarios

I think what this decision really says is there is no 'set in stone' situation as far as the QBs are concerned.

A lot of us have been predicting this situation all offseason, that if Brunell goes down for a short period of time, Collins will probably play, and if it's a long term situation then Campbell will play.

But of course Gibbs left anything open, I think it really depends on the situation at hand. If the team is rolling and Collins plays well, I think we would stick with him. If the team is out of the race, Campbell would probably be more likely to take over.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed that MB can stay healthy and we don't have to worry about any of this.

Re: Backup QB scenarios

It sounds to me like Campbell would require a limited game plan and they would therefore need a week to implement said game plan to maximize performance so if Brunell goes down they bring in Collins so they don't have to alter the game plan as much. IE they can run the same game plans with Collins and Brunell but not with Campbell so he doesn't get mop up or emergency action. He gets his own game planning and the time it takes during the week to make it work best.
