Sweat traded to the Bears, Young to the 49ers
Trade: Commanders and Bears have agreed to a trade that is expected to send DE Montez Sweat to the Chicago for a 2024 second-round pick, per sources. Sweat is in the last year of his contract, and the Commanders are opting for a draft pick now. Chicago beefs up its line.

We got less for Sweat than Giants did for Williams...

In reality is high second rounder, Chicago won’t be winning many games vs what Seahawks will. |
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
I agree...decent value. If you were not going to try and sign both he and Young, get what you can for him and 2nd is probably the best they could do so at least they got something in return.

Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Its actually a good move, high 2nd for a guy thats leaving anyway and TBH Isn't that great. They need to trade CY Too

Good point, I didn't think of that.. With that fact, the trade does look better to me now. |
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
If the season ended today, it would be the 35th overall pick.
|
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Trade CY To Baltimore for a 2nd also and we are cooking
|
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
In 5 years Sweat has had 35 sacks (67 games)
|
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Find it hard to believe Ron was involved, wouldn't have have gotten such a good deal, Mayhew neither.
|
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Its a great move, def unlike Ron. I like Sweat but he's not worth a huge deal

He probably was, but was told to stockpile picks by ownership. Head scratchers for the Bears, as I don't see them winning many games (like us). I can't see anyone beating the Lions in the division. |
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Seems a little odd to me if Chicago haven't agreed to a new deal, they have plenty of cap space but can hardly be called contenders for next year ( unless they are playing us of course) Added bonus, saves us $6m from this years cap

We got him with the 26th. Then 4 and 1/2 years of work and turned into a high second round. That is a solid ROI. |

Bears 2nd rounder is definitely more valuable than the Seahawks 2nd rounder |

First move of the Harris era, and it’s a good one.

Don't forget the Giants are eating some salary so the 5th is basically for that.

Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
The Bears traded a 2nd for Chase Claypool last year.

Why are the Bears even buyers?????

They are looking long term. Build the defense like all bears teams but Sweat isn’t going to be worth that 100M they will give him Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Waiting for the other shoe to drop; Young, Fuller etc.

Agreed. He's not in with the Parsons/Macks/Watt's, but he's always been a solid pass rusher and playmaker. Wish him the best. Sad to see him go but he's being wasted here under JDR and Ron. |
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Per John Keim:
Grade for the Commanders: A I'm pleasantly surprised the Commanders recognized they ought to be dealing away players at the deadline rather than acquiring them, and that they chose Sweat to be the player to trade as opposed to Chase Young. In comparison to Sweat, Young appears to be a much better long-term asset. Young is almost three years younger and has a 25% pass rush win rate at edge this season, which ranks 11th-best. Not only is that three times as high as Sweat's PRWR at edge this year, but it's also significantly better than Sweat's best PRWR in any year. By dealing Sweat now, the Commanders are gaining future resources, which they need. It also will be helpful in their negotiation with Young, who is in the last year of his rookie deal. Had they kept Sweat and Young, they would have only been able to franchise tag one of them. Now, the threat of the tag on Young is stronger, though cornerback Kendall Fuller is a pending free agent, too. Theoretically, the Commanders might have been able to let Sweat walk in free agency and gained a compensatory selection, but that pick would have been no better than a 2025 late third-rounder -- and even that would have been far from guaranteed. Washington ranks fourth in effective cap space in 2025, per Over The Cap, so it could be a big spender in free agency, thus possibly canceling out a compensatory pick. The cherry on top here is that this is the Bears' second-round pick, so it will very likely be early in the round. |
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
All great points. A move that just had to be made, and we got the best possible return.
|
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
Perhaps Ron has been already told he will not be back next year, and to go out and get as many picks as he can for the new regime.
I would trade Chase. He is never going to be a dominant player. He can feast off of scrub players but that's about it. The defense plays better w/out him. |

He quits on plays ALL THE TIME. Him quitting early almost cost us that curl strip being recovered. The guy just stops when the plays barely passes him. Time to move on, because he doesn't move enough. Didn't like the pick when we chose him, still don't like it now. Thanks for the flash your rookie year, all your hard work to try and get back on the field and we wish you the best. It stings getting a 2nd rounder if that's the case but I'll take it. Update. Stings even harder that it's a low 3rd round. Ouch. |
Re: Sweat to the bears for a 2nd rounder
And just like that Chase is gone...

I believe this organization hasn't used him properly and that a new, more creative and aggressive DC could put him in position to contribute more. I hope he stays but I'll accept it if he goes as long as the return is satisfactory. |

A third for Chase? Well done SF. Fuck you Ron.

You know Young will live up to his status now in SF with better coaching. What a stupid fucking trade, he’s having an awesome year and gave away for nothing.
