Commanders Free Agency Expectations

With Payne tagged, McCain cut and multiple Skins hitting free agency including 2 Guards Turner and Schweitzer, starter Cole Holcomb, and key back ups like Danny Johnson…what are your expectations? Who do you like?

I didn’t forget Henike either, but too much QB talk lately. Let’s look at the holes and what other players are leaving.

Right now Nickel Corner, starting LB and Right Guard are vacant. Depth is also questionable at LB, interior Oline and Corner in general. So the talk it’s not just the talk of “this can wait until draft”, we need more than just one body in these areas.

IMO, enough of drafting and Jon Bostic. Holcomb coming of injury and is a nice player…there should be inexpensive vet options at LB to pair with a “still” developing Davis.

Fuller is going into his final year as well, what about adding another vet to the CB room who has experience at Nickel?

Guard market this year is better than the previous couple, moving Cosmi is an option, but I’d look at bringing someone in at Guard.

Thoughts?

I don’t see us being big spenders…I don’t want that, but that doesn’t mean we can’t add some difference makers.

Don't expect the Commanders to be big free-agent spenders, but there is one intriguing category they can attack aggressively: prove-it deals.

Yeah I don’t want us to be big spenders, the prove it deals could be interesting…the first guy that comes to mind would be LT Taylor Lewan, but i wouldn’t swing with his playing history or non playing history the last 3 years.

I feel like those type of prove it deals are associated with cut veterans with recent injury history or cut due to regime change/scheme fit. Maybe cap casualty…

It's probably going to be this kind of offseason with regard to free agency:

I don't want to necessarily be "big" spenders, but I hope we are spenders. You can't fill all the holes in the draft.

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

I don't know how much cash flow problems are a real problem, but i'd like to see a good ILB (some are available) and 2 OL types with starting experience (and drafting a CB/OT most likely). We'll need another LB as depth, but if we're going to spend, a good ILB sounds like a reasonable place to do it.

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

The Commanders reported cash flow problems further illustrate that Dan Snyder's inept leadership of the franchise does indeed affect the on-field product. Ron Rivera may have full control of the on field product but what can he do in free agency without the cash to sign starter quality free agents? We need both free agents and good draftees to finish building a contender.

Until we have new ownership with deep pockets and a desire to improve all aspects of the franchise I don't expect to see any meaningful free agent additions. That said, I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Have to put guaranteed money in escrow so it will hamper big signings.

Like the dude’s rug, good LB play would really tie the defense together.

Makes you wonder whether they are using the tag on Payne to get past the ownership change and will sign him once they get approval from the new owner

Bingo. The Franchise tag isn't effected by cash flow since it is paid game by game equally, which is why I predicted they'd go the franchise tag route with Payne. Once new owners are aboard the possibility of a long term deals for free agents comes back into play (I predict we do next to nothing next week because of this problem).

Dang - Jalen Ramsey to the Phins for a 3rd and a backup TE. Wish we’d have cut that deal.

Wow, steal for Miami!

CB that I wouldn’t mind going after, James Bradberry. Scheme fit and this:

How good was James Bradberry last season?

Bradberry's coverage numbers (minimum 75 targets):

Completion rate -- 44% (1st in #NFL)
Yards per attempt -- 4.7 (1st)
Opposing QB rating -- 44.5 (1st)

CB is a need, Fuller last year of deal

@commanders

We have signed LB Khaleke Hudson to a one-year contract extension for the 2023 season

We probably couldn't afford it. Ramsey will get $20M avg. and $25M of it guaranteed, over 2 years. As some have said, with an ownership change likely, guaranteed deals like that probably won't be on the table. And his preferred location was Miami anyway.

I agree target Bradberry, should be reasonable on contract, or draft someone like Porter in the 1st round. Secondary should be sound, then FA/draft OL and LB.

Agreed, as its the kind of commitment I wouldn't expect from Snyder at this juncture. Or maybe it helps with the sale, helping retain assets?

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

I wonder if this means signing Chase’s 5th year option is less likely. We have a lot of $ tied up in this line.

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

Thats a bigger deal than I would have expected, would almost certainly signal the end of one of Sweat or Young. Good thing to get it done before the other FA DTs get their new deals though.

EdmundDorf 03-12-2023 04:35 PM

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

On the plus side, as the first year cap hit is usually engineered to be less than half the APY of the contract we should get an extra $8-10m in cap space aswell

Schneed10 03-12-2023 04:41 PM

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

I’m pretty surprised this got done, because as soon as the ink goes on the contract the commanders have to put the $60M guaranteed cash aside in escrow. So Dan either signed off on that, or the sale is so close and so assured that he doesn’t care because he’s about to land $6B.

Schneed10 03-12-2023 04:42 PM

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

But I’ll take it! Happy to lock up our guys. What we do at end is a really interesting question now. Trade Chase? I can see an argument for it.

But none on an OLinemen or QB, which is the beauty of maybe signing Sweat and Chase. Most teams have their money invested on both DL and OL. I would now cut Thomas and Roullier.

Interesting tidbit on escrow requirements
Kevin Sheehan on Twitter

(1of 2) So on the “escrow” requirement for the Payne deal.

@SalaryCap101 just told me the review for 2023 escrow requirements just took place on Jan 31st 2023.

Deadline to fund is end of this month on March 31st.

But because the Payne deal came after this yrs review date…

(2 of 2) ….his deal won’t be reviewed for escrow purposes until the next review date which is Jan 31st, 2024.

So, whatever portion of the gtd $60M hasn’t been paid as of next year, that amt will be will be put into escrow.

Translation, the next owner 🤞will fund it.

Well, so much for my theory. So NFL.com has Hudson pictured saying it is Payne. That site really needs some work.

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

Very glad about the Payne deal, yes that's a lot of money invested into our Dline, but I feel like we haven't seen this team use its strength to its full potential yet, so I'd hate to see some of them go already, not now, not when we're on the verge of hopefully finally having competent leadership.

I don't want a big $ DB in FA, we have 4 very good guys, draft some depth and hopefully a fifth solid starter.

Save our cap space to sign one solid ILB and a couple of decent Olinemen !

EdmundDorf 03-12-2023 07:56 PM

Re: Commanders Free Agency Expectations

Apparently Paynes new deal clears $9.4m in cap space according to PFT, puts us well over 20m

I don’t think you are going to see them splurging in FA. They need value FA like Dillard
Oline from Philly, I have a feeling Holcomb is not coming back now.

I'm not sold on this. You don't pay a guy that kind of money for 1 good year out of 5. It's not smart. If he plays like he did last year, it'll be a value, but his history says otherwise.

Give me a more experienced passer running a mature offense by EB.

Would you rather have Marcus Mariota? I say bring Heinicken back, maybe he'll get better with EB. Chad Henne was mediocre journey man and became a solid backup under Reid and EB
