I’m assuming they will extend Payne soon. Keep that front 4 together for years

Re: Commanders free agency thread
Dipshits just lost 2 solid DT backups, losing Settle was stupid, releasing Matt I. Was dumb. There goes our DL depth. Don’t like our new front office.
|
Re: Commanders free agency thread
Yeah they suck. Can't believe they don't have this team put together after the first two days of free agency.
|
Re: Commanders free agency thread
51 tackles 2.5 sacks ... production from Matty I and Settle last year.
I think we'll be alright, we love matty I for his 2019 64 tackle 8.5 sack year .. but hes had 45 tackles and 4 sacks total the last 2 years. He can collapse a pocket, I like him but he was rotational piece. We love Settle for what he can or could become but he was depth. |

If you don’t give them a chance to play that’s what you get. On Rivera’s 1st year was playing more and had 7 sacks. Payne should have been traded and Settle Kept. You watch him flourish in Buffalo. |

I think they did try to keep Settle but didn’t work out. Matty I was just a kick to the nuts. |

Kept. Id rather the cap room to fill other holes, maybe resign Terry etc vs continuing to be overloaded at IDL where guys like Matty I see 33% of the snaps and Settle sees 5% (making up these snap counts) |

Buffalo gave Settle a 3yr $9m contract, essentially $3m py, so they didn't try that hard. Settle didn't play many reps but when he did he had an impact |

So we have lost Scherff, flowers,Settle and Matt I. Gained a washed QB that made it possible for this team to take most of our cap space. Stupid fucking moves, they are banking on Wentz playing his old self. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
I know the coaches are really high on Daniel Wise and want to get him more work this year.

And I'll take that over: - Heinecke's noodle arm - Mitch Trubisky - Overpaying in picks/$$ for Jimmy G and his bum shoulder - Trading up for any QB in this class And at this point those seem to be our only options. |

Think maybe him and Rotimi are the plan at backup DT |

And you can add through the draft. I believe both Matty I and Settle were draft picks by us. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
Settle played 20% of defensive snaps last year. I'm not sure why we're up in arms about not paying him.
Scherff was never coming back. They probably intended to keep Matty I, but once they upgraded the QB position and took on that contract, some moves to clear cap space had to be made. Tough decisions - that's why they get paid the big bucks. I'd gladly sacrifice Matty I and E Flowers for a QB that can get it done. |

Wentz bounced back last year, def showed some life. I like the QB move especially faced with other options we coulda taken. I’m not sold on this QB class in the draft and I don’t think a lot others are as well with so many QB moves in trades and quick signings. I thought it was a sound move to get Wentz, I like his arm and admire his sometime wreckless play. We will see |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
And I guess we do not know if they tried to restructure Matty I's contract to get him to stick around. I'd like to know if they did. He was a 5th rounder, if memory serves, and I am not sure what round we picked Settle (4th?). These guys can be had in the draft. But when you see guys play well, work hard, and contribute, if you don't have to overpay to keep them -- and it isn't clear we did -- it would have been nice to see them stick around. I am actually more concerned about Flowers because we are now down our two starting guards, and Flowers has played very well for us. Again, I wonder whether we tried to re-sign or re-structure to keep him with us. It's hard to be too critical not knowing.
The Titans just cut Julio Jones. Whoa. Just one season in TN. I wonder where he ends up. I hope not Dallas of Philly, but of whom need WR help. I know he's past his prime, but the dude's a freak of nature. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
Since the start of the 2017 season, Carson Wentz has thrown 124 touchdown passes, the eighth-most in the NFL during that span.
Wentz has thrown 3+ TD's in 16 games since 2017, tied for the ninth-most in the NFL. Washington as a team has had eight such games during that span. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
Wouldn't extend Payne yet. I need to see the performance of Sweat and Young this year. Extending those guys will cost $25M or $30M per year, if they play like they should be able to.
Ends are more important than DTs, and I'm not sure we can afford to pay Payne and still have the cash for Sweat and Young. Ideally we would have cut Ioannidis and kept Settle, but Settle wouldn't want to stay here behind Payne and Allen, he wants to play, as he should. We were never keeping Settle. And as much as I loved Ioannidis, he has not been impactful the last few years since the knee. These kinds of salary cap decisions are those that all teams with QBs on their second contract have to deal with. Depth should be filled out with young guys with upside and bargain FAs. We should not be paying our depth guys starter money. |

Agreed. Myles Jack was signed right away by the Steelers (2yr 16M), we can not afford to not have a significant addition at MLB. Do it now. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
B Wagner is much better than M Jack. You won't get him for 2yr 16M. Would love to have him though.
Wonder what the plan is for MLB... |

Re: Commanders free agency thread
Hard to say. He was just making 18 M / yr with Seattle. Wonder how much of a reduction in pay he is willing to take - probably won't have to. My guess is he can get at least that from someone. What he could potentially bring to this defense - it's hard to put a $$ amount on that.

Re: Commanders free agency thread
We make a big signing tomorrow. Book it.

Oh jeez yeah I had misread otc I didn't realize his apy was so high ! Yeah not sure they are willing to spend that big on this position... Joe Schobert is said to be released by the Steelers following Myles Jack's signing, what do you think ? |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
I think Jordan Hicks was the more realistic target. When you look at what the Vikings paid him, 2 yr $10m contract with a $3.5m cap hit in '22 it is hard to understand if we were at all interested . As for Wagner, I think he will probably only sign a sub $15m py contract with a contender or somewhere he has connections like Dallas. Outside of these two the only other option would be if Ron or JDR have identified a rough diamond, a LB version of Logan Thomas. The rest are very meh.

The thing is I'll take known meh over being naked at LB for another season. Holcomb, Jamin Davis, Hudson, Mayo and a couple of UDFAs is not a viable option. If we can't land Wagner, nor Schobert, (then why the F weren't we agressive on Myles Jack? He is athletic and led the jags in tackles last year. But that's not the point), I'll take a proven vet ala Hightower, Van Noyle or Minter. We can not not sign somebody in my view. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
"The rest are Meh" was a broad inclusion of the Mayo/Bostic group. So there may be a few who are a little better than meh, I will defer to those with greater knowledge of the free agency landscape. It seems to me that many of the guys still out there are more OLB types than MLBs. After last year, I am not sure Ron and Co have the options that they think they have. As you say adding a couple of UDFAs to the current personnel is not a viable option, but that is exactly what they did last year. My broader point is, if they were targeting a starting quality MLB they have inexplicably let some good one escape for very little money.

Jp:
Name I keep hearing (Chico warpath posting included) for Washington to target is veteran guard Andrew Norwell. Played in Jax last four years but was in Carolina before that. Brings veteran presence and nastiness to the line. |

Matty I , I can live with he seems to be injury prone at this point. Settle I wish we had kept. Maybe not by trading Payne, but depending on what we got in return Id have tried. Edit : matty I only had the one year with injuries so injury prone probably not, but at any rate i can live with him being gone. Settle to me was a better player and loved him rotating in snd out. Obviously though the guy could start elsewhere so. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
Seems the Giants have picked up Ricky Seal-Jones ,anyone is better then Engram as far as I'm concerned. Stats are very similar.

Re: Commanders free agency thread
@RapSheet
The Washington #Commanders are expected to sign former #Jaguars and #Panthers guard Andrew Norwell , source said. They are close on a deal. He fills a big void on the offensive line. |
Re: Commanders free agency thread
Nice. Wonder if it is less than what Flowers was set to make.
