Anyone spending time worrying about Chase, can spend that time somewhere else.
That guy is and will continue to be an absolute beast. |

I tend to agree with JDR, even if his numbers don't reflect it the constant chips and double teams are leaving good opportunities for the other guys, who are also taking advantage of it. If he keeps it up the numbers will eventually reflect his play. |

Re: Chase Young is PFF's top graded defensive rookie so far
On Wednesday, Washington linebacker Jon Bostic explained how Young's advanced ability against the run and his aptitude defending screens are examples of elite defense that don't exactly show up on the box score.
"A lot of people on the outside, they kind of just look at it like, 'Well, how many sacks does he have?'" Bostic said. "You look at how he's affecting the defense, just in the run game, with his effort running to the ball. On screenplays, how he's playing those. That is, when you talk about a well-rounded defensive end, that's what you're looking for." --------- His ability to sniff out a screen pass or roll out early and get of his blocker His ability to come off blockers to tackle the runner by remaining engaged with them and waiting until the right moment to disengage his IQ and play recognition and reaction is so high already Of course his first step quickness is just insane Hes a freak. |

Sack do not tell the full story, he's been a great addition for sure.
Gibson is also a top 3 Rookie at PFF as well. |

Would it be wrong to suggest that with a great MLB and S, we would have a scary dominant D, a la the Suggs/Lewis/Reed combo? |

You are correct. |
Re: Chase Young is PFF's top graded defensive rookie so far
So we could have the top-graded defensive rookie AND top-graded offensive rookie, and some of you are still doubting Rivera?

It doesn't matter. We don't have a QB. You can find players like Gibson in every draft. Did you see what Tua did yesterday? Players like him are not in every draft. We could've had him. |

If he finishes the season without getting hurt, I'll think about wishing we drafted him. But it's only been 2 games, including game 1 where he had less than 100 yards passing I believe. |
Re: Chase Young is PFF's top graded defensive rookie so far
Another quiet game from Chase. I want to see the snap count but it appears Chase was being subbed out more yesterday. He was playing like 98% of the snaps, even coming off the injury.
Id love to see isolated film of him. Is he losing the hand fighting battle, is he relying on the same move every time, is he able to push a tackle back? ive seen a nice inside move by him. Ive seen him do a good job of shedding blockers on runs his way. Ive seen him do a good job of reading a screen and reacting. Ive seen everything but him blow the doors off a tackle, which is what I thought was his specialty given his burst off the snap. Just seems like he gets slow downed just enough at the LOS. |
Re: Chase Young is PFF's top graded defensive rookie so far
Seems like every time I focused on him he was getting doubled.
|
Re: Chase Young is PFF's top graded defensive rookie so far
He's the best player on a bad defense. O coordinators are going to scheme so that he does not beat them. Often times that means double and triple teams. He will get his sacks, pressures, tackles for loss…, but his impact is mostly going to be felt by other players stepping up and making plays because Chase is occupying more than one lineman/TE.
Yesterday, virtually no one on that D made plays though... Not a good day. |
Re: Chase Young is PFF's top graded defensive rookie so far
We miss Matty I. so much. He is our best DL.
We don't need to keep Allen and Payne, re-sign whichever 1 of the 2 you think is best, and draft a cheap rotational guy this year or next. Allen/Payne, Matty I., Settle, Rookie, is still very solid. |

It's not like we're hurting for cap space, and we'll clear up 20 mil with Alex Smith gone (or renegotiated if we bring in a rookie next year). I don't understand this "let solid guy like Scherff/Allen/Payne go" talk, you build your team around solid guys like that instead of letting them walk and drafting a cheap replacement that isn't guaranteed to do as good a job as they do. I realize our d has been underwhelming this year but I still believe the problem is with the LB's/secondary. |

Hard to tie up tons of money in 1 position, even if in good cap position. Good to have cap flexibility to re-up your other guys and sign outside FAs. I won't lose sleep if we sign both. Not sure how feasible it is though. Teams lose good players every year. Not possible to keep everyone every FA period. |
