Coronavirus (political)

The plan, which McConnell said Thursday creates “money for people, from the middle class down, period,” includes direct payments of $1,200 per person and $2,400 for couples to help offset economic losses amid the growing pandemic. But the provision that Hawley labeled “regressive” states that size of the checks will be halved for Americans with no federal income tax liability. While the Senate Finance Committee said the bill “ensures relief gets to low-income seniors and disabled veterans,” the plan will also affect poor Americans.

Earlier this week, Hawley released his own plan targeted at all single parents making less than $50,000, and all married parents making less than $100,000, to assist working families with cash payments — a proposal enthusiastically endorsed by Quinton Lucas, Democratic mayor of Kansas City, Missouri.

President Donald Trump made clear Tuesday that the massive economic stimulus package his administration is proposing to deal with the coronavirus crisis will include a multibillion-dollar bailout both for the U.S. airlines and for Boeing.

“Yes, I think we have to protect Boeing,” Trump said. “We have to absolutely help Boeing.”

Boeing said Tuesday it’s asking for “a minimum of $60 billion … for the aerospace manufacturing industry” in a combination of direct taxpayer money and loans from banks backed by government guarantees.

The nation’s America’s aerospace industry supports over 2.5 million jobs and 17,000 suppliers, Boeing said in a statement, and government financial support is “needed to manage the pressure on the aviation sector and the economy as a whole.”

U.S. airlines are also seeking over $50 billion in financial assistance, including grants, tax relief and government-backed loans.

That’s hard to swallow for critics of big business, who point to the billions of dollars in profits both U.S. airlines and Boeing have made over the past decade — profits that management used in good measure to pay tens of millions of dollars to top executives, to juice the stock price with massive share buybacks and to deliver handsome dividends to shareholders.

1. Checks to americans. I wouldnt get a penny and Im fine with that. Im not sure what 2 checks for like $700 each will do, I imagine it will just get absorbed in a day and we are right back to where we were a few days before but now with a huge debt.

2. Boening .. go fuck yourself. 60 billion? Your fucking stock is still going up .. fuck off. Trillionaires asking for billions. The loses arent even fully realized yet but we are just going to start throwing big money at big companies ...

Re: Coronavirus (political)

This thread can be for political aspects of the Coronavirus.

Its so intimately intertwined with each other ... but our non-political thread is doing a great job of just focusing on the impact on us personally and talking the real human aspects and how we are doing day to day .... I didnt want to introduce politics into that discussion.

BUT WAIT .... THAT DOESNT MEAN THIS HAS TO TURN INTO TRIBAL TRENCH WARFARE

We can talk about things being done, not being done while focusing on what is best for the country.

I imagine this thread wont get to much activity but I wanted a place I or others could dump political related coronavirus stuff without tainting our non-political thread.

Ffs. This is exactly why this pc woke bullshit is fucking up this country. Why are the gop obsessed with Hillary, because she refuses to go away and becomes propaganda for communist talking points. China is using this shit and it’s effective.

After this is over, I hope we punish the Chinese in a way it sets them back 500 years.

“The president is turning to racist rhetoric to distract from his failures to take the coronavirus seriously early on, make tests widely available, and adequately prepare the country for a period of crisis,” Clinton wrote on Twitter. “Don’t fall for it. Don’t let your friends and family fall for it.”

^^ thats hillary clintons tweet.

Many people are critical of Trumps response. Many people think Trump insisting on calling the "Chinese Virus" is not helpful and is dog whistle to absolve him of any and all blame for his failures to act.

Clintons tweet was nothing out of the ordinary.

Trumps one response is that he placed a travel ban on China. Thank you for that. I personally dont have much against Trump on this. Yes he downplayed it and said it would go from 15 to 0 very soon. Yes he still hasnt officially ordered companies to start producing ventilators and masks under the DPA (but has been working with private companies?).

Honestly, my one suggestion would be for him to just stop talking at this point. Last week he did a press conf with various governors and trump said for them to purchase medical supplies. Governors said they are trying but are constantly getting outbid by the federal government bids.

trump chuckled and seemed pleased his federal government won.

Its all about "winning" for his team.
--------------
During a conference call with governors on Thursday, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker told Trump his state was denied three major orders of equipment because the federal government had outbid him.

"I'm not quite sure what to do with this, so I'm just going to throw it out there for you," Baker told Trump on the call, according to Bloomberg News. "We took very seriously the push ... that we should not just rely on the stockpile, that we should go out there and buy stuff and put in orders and try to create pressure on manufacturers and distributors, and I gotta tell you that on three big orders, we lost to the feds."

Baker, a moderate Republican, added, "I've got a feeling that if someone has the chance to sell to you and to sell to me, I am going to lose on every one of those."

Trump chuckled at that and then said the federal government probably offered the manufacturers a better price.

"Price is always a component of that also," Trump said. "And maybe that's why you lost to the feds, okay, I'll tell you, that's probably why."
https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-trump-outbid-states-on-medical-supplies-2020-3
-------------------

Let Pence and his team work with the governors.

I trust Pence to be straight forward and actually work with the States.

Calling it China virus, Wuhan virus isn’t racist. It’s fighting a China disinformation campaign currently underway. Do you need help finding information on this campaign? This campaign is too absolve blame and say this started elsewhere. We know it’s working as the excuses for China are being made.

Clinton’s tweet is being used in this propaganda campaign by a shithole country that is the absolute only reason the entire world is dealing with this epidemic. They lied, covered up, let it sick fucking people travel throughout the world spreading it. That’s a fact jack. So keep carrying its water...

January 14 WHO statement: China has found no evidence of human to human transmission of the virus.

That’s the statement which will haunt them as they are then advising government agencies based on this information

Once upon a time, a woman was picking up firewood. She came upon a poisonous snake frozen in the snow. She took the snake home and nursed it back to health. One day the snake bit her on the cheek. As she lay dying, she asked the snake, "Why have you done this to me?" And the snake answered, "Look, bitch, you knew I was a snake."

China is a snake. I am not surprised they tried to downplay it. However, I can compartamentalize the various intertwined issues.

Yes, China sucks, has always sucked and will continue to suck and cannot be trusted.

Yes, it absolutely came from China and China downplayed it putting the entire planet at a higher risk.

Yes, we as americans can still criticize our government for the actions or inactions since they were put on notice.

Yes, there are some legit criticisms to be made.

I blame China up to January 23 or so. After that, we were on clear notice and we are responsible for our decisions made after that.

I can blame China for their part, and question my government for their part.

Criticizing trump does not equal sticking up for China. To take such a narrow view and then mandate everyone think or speak only in your terms and all others are "carrying Chinas water ..."

I am pretty sure the virus came from China as many of the ones transmitted from animals do, because of their wet markets and unsanitary habits associated with their diet. That being said the virus will get rid of Trump. First it is hard to defeat a sitting president when the economy is doing well. How everyone is reacting to the virus from the top down will send us into something worse than the last recession. The second dagger is his handling of the whole mess. Right now in the off shore books Biden and him are dead locked, when 3 weeks ago Biden was a 20-1 shot. Biden has all the momentum.

Here you go and recently completed in October 2019 by John Hopkins- an authority - 2019 Global Health Security Index

It will give the rankings and all the data about being prepared. Yes we are number 1

What this doesn’t help explain how bad actors covered this up for around 75 days before they communicated it properly to the rest of the world. It’s tough to prepare against that...Doesn’t explain how China in late January hoarded all the respirators on the market.

It was too late to stop before whatever your start date to start yelling at the President. How many sick Chinese traveled outside their country by January 1st while China sat back?

I’m still old enough to remember the criticism by the media when he cut off China and then Europe.

Trump was already sinking before the virus, that will just be a whole handful of nails in his coffin. Well before the mass hysteria, on March 3rd Virginia got about a 50% higher turnout than normal for a primary or off year election. That was driven by anti-Trump republicans going out to vote for Joe Biden and I was one of them.

I really don't know how many diehard supporters Trump has. I would truly be shocked if there were a lot. We all know how the media can project what they want. He caught lightning in a bottle to get elected. There were plenty of Republicans ripe to have flipped sides if it was anyone but Hillary. There were democrats that could not stand her that went write in, 3rd party or stayed home. He did run a smart campaign, not wasting time with states where he had no chance.

Have you seen his rally's? I voted for Trump because I couldnt stand Hilary, and I dont feel much better about Biden.I recently made the mistake of criticizing Trump on Facebook and man was I attacked. In the past when I would see a broadcast that would mock Trump supporters, saying things like Trump could murder somebody and his supporters would defend him,and I would think that's b.s.,because I didnt feel that way.But after the reaction I received on FB I'm believing that to be true, there was no reasoning with them, they refused to believe facts.Just because you voted for him should not be a reason to defend him no matter what he's done,if he's made a mistake you should be able to call him out on it,not defend everything he's done

Chico, we all literally blame China. Now what? Do we need to focus America's collective might on punishing China, and that will stop the virus?

Or do you need to postpone thinking up ways to punish China and stop the goddamn virus first?

Every time I wonder how low Trump can go he surprises me. From the "I don't take responsibility at all" to now forcing states to bid against each other and the feds for critical supplies, it literally boggles my mind how anyone can think he's doing a great job of managing this crisis.

Why can't these assholes just pass 2 separate bills? 1 immediately that gets cash in American's hands and 1 with all the other bullshit they are fighting over?? Bill 1 only needs 3 sentences:

1. All single filers get 1000 in April and May
2. All joint filers get 2000
3. 500 for each child

Or change the amount as needed. But the bill is done.

But nope. Let's have 300 things included in 1 giant bill and have a pissing match over it while every day Americans are suffering.

Fuck all of them.

Does anyone have a guess on when some of the restrictions may slightly be reduced? I realize there is a dangerous line to balance between trying to protect the health of the people, and trying to prevent the collapse of America.

To me, it seems that the lockdowns are not long-term feasible, and with a vaccine still 18 months away, there is no way they expect people to be out of work / hiding in their houses for 18 more months...

No shock there as Democrats usually win the inner cities and they usually have a high population density. The more people per square mile the easier any airborne pathogen can spread in numbers of infected. Not sure what you are getting at.

I'm spoiled on the west coast, but I went there in 2007 in August. I was not prepared. It was so fucking humid. I was walking around downtown New York City in a wifebeater. And it was so damn humid I didn't care.

There are a shit ton of people there. You have to have a certain mindset to be able to live there (if you weren't raised there). I definitely don't have it.

I'm originally from the bay area, and San Francisco is a mini NYC. I could never live there. To me its insane, but people there seem to love it.

It takes all kinds I guess.

When I lived in Riverside I probably made a trip to San Fran every one to two years from 1996-2010 (When I moved East). I know the locals make fun of the tourists that hit the pier 39 area, but I always liked The Saloon and that museum full of old arcade games that you can still play. Of course who doesn't like all those obnoxious seals on the docks and those old boats.
It may be crowded, but nothing like the NYC area. The NYC area had me saying FTS, never again.
...and then you post a trump meme about something he said years ago...

Mooby, first thing is have patience and expect testing numbers to go way up as well as cases. 2nd thing, can your fucking generation stop traveling? It’s amazing how the constant bitch about not affording things, yet want to travel all the time. Y’all are spreading this shit. I know gas is a 1.80, I know plane tickets are the lowest since the 80s...3rd, stay in the house and obey local government. It’s no wonder nyc is full of Coronavirus, they refuse to stay inside. My bro in law says no one gives a shit, city been packed. 4th, stop policing speech it’s not spreading the disease or stopping it.

Everyone gonna have to be uncomfortable, just settle in and ride it out. I’m glad you are blaming China, their negligence have cost lives in a way that it’s like an act of war. Just think of all the sick people they exported. Italy has traced patient zero to a Chinese couple traveling...my sister’s nanny up in Connecticut is from a town in Northern Italy, her parents’ longtime neighbor died Sunday...early fifties. China has blood on their hands across the world.
I did stop traveling FYI, I had a trip booked for tomorrow-Sunday that's cancelled now. Still have my Vegas-Cali trip flight tickets booked for June but obviously that's going to be cancelled too unless the virus goes away.

In the meantime I agree, but don't be so narrow and blame millenials. We're in our 30's now, and it seems a lot of these idiots going out and partying/etc. are in their 20's. Different generation, obviously not concerned a bit about the virus.

I had to confirm it was real. Hint: It was
I just find it amazing that more people aren't appalled by our President saying I don't take responsibility and then pretending he knew nothing about disbanding the White House pandemic office, and then having the gall to make the reporter asking the question out to be the bad guy.

We're in the middle of a major fucking crisis and this guy is passing the buck and getting pissy at reporters for doing their jobs. Unbelievable.

Man dies, woman left in critical condition after taking chloroquine phosphate

An Arizona woman who was left in critical condition and whose husband died after they {took chloroquine phosphate} said, “Don’t believe anything that the president says.”

The only Trump news I get is all second hand. If he starts talking I change the channel. He probably has done more than any president that has impacted me with the tariffs, but listening to that obnoxious, unhinged blowhard does nothing but get my blood pressure up. I pretty much ignore him.

I am shocked at how many people never heard of Trump till he was on reality TV. Heck my girlfriend didn't know who he was till he ran for president. I have been appalled by the guy since he owned the New Jersey Generals 35 years ago.
Then there was al the crap he pulled in Atlantic City.
