You Got a Better Plan?
Taking the premise that the Skins do not sign Kirk Cousins to a long-term deal, what would you do then?
In my view the first advantage this would provide would be a lot more cap space. I would use it on a couple of top-notch, young FA's. I realize that FA is about to begin but the Skins may already know whether or not they're likely to sign Kirk. So, what the heck, dive into FA! I believe that a team has to have true star players sprinkled throughout its position groups to be a contender. I'm not a big fan of mid-level FA's because they don't move the needle much, IMO. So the first thing I'd do is to go all out to sign Brandon Williams to anchor our DL and Dont'a Hightower to anchor the middle of our defense. These are two young , talented players who we could wrap up for five years. We'll have plenty of cap space, so I'd re-sign Chris Baker and sign a few other good FA's such as Ron Leary (LG). Now, it's time to trade Kirk. I feel that we don't need to "win" a trade for Kirk, we just need to get one potential star. Kirk wants to go to SF. So be it. The cost to SF for Kirk is the #2 pick in this year's draft. Sure, we'll try to get more but there is no trade without that #2 pick. With that pick, I'd draft Johnathan Allen to play 3-4 DE. Next, I'm going for Leonard Fournette. We're losing our starting QB and we'll be weaker in the passing game, so we've got to improve our running game. The Jets are shopping the #6 pick, so I'd trade for that pick with the idea of picking Fournette at #6. That will take our #17 pick and some other picks. If we can't get Fournette, I'd take Dalvin Cook. If we can't get either one, I'd draft another position. I want to achieve this: Rebuild our DL with Johnathan Allen, Brandon Williams, and Chris Baker Strengthen our Running game with Leonard Fournette and Ron Leary. Put a playmaker in the middle of our defense with Dont'a Hightower. You got a better plan? |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
I don't have a better plan. GL with that. If Kirk and McC leaves I am too. I'll still root for the team but it will be quietly distant from the shadows. I'll become that old guy who hangs out in the parking lot and reminisces about the glory days of 2015-2016.

Re: You Got a Better Plan?
I like all those players you listed and I like the premise of moving to a Power run team with Fournette with strong additions to the front seven. Physical defense/Physical Run team.
Big problem is the QB...you start Colt, your looking at double digit losses. I would then look to make a move for Tyrod Taylor or Jimmy Garapolo. I think they are both intriguing options with upside. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
QB is too important, while some argue Kirk is not as good as his stats suggest he is easily a top ten QB and that is good enough to have long term year in year out success. Get him signed or bust, give him 5 years $120 mil with $50 mil guaranteed and call it a day. You are paying him $24 mil this year anyway.
The only possibly available QB in Kirk's league is Romo and he is 37 and injury prone. If you let Kirk go you could have another 20 years of poor QB play. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
If, and a big IF, the Skins don't believe Cousins is the long term solution, then I agree with the OP and trade to 49ers for picks.
At that point, address the issues on the OL and DL. Use the Cap space to get 1 DL, 1 Safety, and maybe LB. Draft for another DL, get couple OL, and maybe RB if one is available. Basically saying this season is a transition to more power running game. For QB, do best to get Tyrod Taylor. Not great, but the way I think they should go if letting KC go. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
Remember that as soon as KC signs the tender that is 24M off the top, so no long term deal actually decreases how much we can do in FA.
Once we start spending in FA - if we do - then KC could actually hold leverage by signing the FT, and not giving us cap space unless we deal him. There is 0 excuse at this point for not having worked out a long term deal prior to free agency. Either way resign Chris Baker before FA. As for a plan, if we don't plan to sign him period. Get a blockbuster trade done like the RG3 one in the next few days, and move forward with that. Sign Williams, target a top DLine with the trade pick, and throw in several of our lower picks to move up to around 12 and get a second top quality Defensive player. On offense, in the 2nd round take the best available QB. Sign Terrelle Pryor - I think he has a lot of upside. Don't use him as a qb. Bring in Cordarelle Patterson if the price is good, and let him return kicks/be a speed guy. |

Kind of like what some of us have been doing with the glory days of 1981-1991. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
I've mulled this over and looked at the top possible rookie QBs and the QB free agents.
There is no decent solution, we have to sign Cousins or we will finish last or second to last in the NFC East. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
There is no better plan, unless the plan is to give up on seriously trying to win. If we botch this one I think I'll hit a new all time low as a fan.

I feel like this is deja vu saying this, but it feels like mother fucking Groundhog Day. One step forward, three steps back. Just want a LITTLE consistency. :(

Re: You Got a Better Plan?
The best plan, which is the most unrealistic plan right now, is for Daniel Snyder to sell the team and hope it's purchased by a more competent owner. Of course, I have a feeling if that ever happens, it will probably wind up being an owner who either moves the team or changes the name - or both. But at least one way or another, there would be a new beginning.
Other than that, I got nothing. |

There is a decent amount of serviceable Wrs in this draft. In fact, I wouldn't even think of getting a WR til round 4-5. Just stack the D with studs. I do like the fact that you drafted 2 receivers though. I am still worried that Docston will end up Taylor Jacobs 2.0 if he can't stay on the field this season. |

I have Corey rated much higher then Davis and try to stick w/ a bpa strategy. And we kinda need WRs too, like you said who knows what is gonna happen w/ Doctson? Under Jay we are a pass first offense. Gotta give the HC the weapons for his system. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
No farging way would I want Jay Cutler.
I'd rather take that potential 2nd ( 1st round) pick and use it to acquire Garropolo or draft one of the big three. |

Re: You Got a Better Plan?
This is what I suggested...
Offense Veterans: Terrelle Pryor Sr. (done) Kendall Wright or Cordarrelle Patterson (Visited Today) or Ted Ginn Jr. (Going to New Orleans) Kevin Zeitler ( Now a Brown) or Luke Joeckel (if he is willing to play guard) Adrian Peterson (1 Year prove it deal) Defensive Veterans: Brandon Williams (Raven resigned) Johnathan Haskins Bennie Logan Lorenzo Alexander ( Leadership, glue guy, Redskin) Donta' Hightower John Cyprien or Tony Jefferson (Got dj swearinger instead) If they make these moves I would be okay with trading Kirk. I would draft Christian McCaffrey, Deshone Kizer, and Johnathon Allen or Solomon Thomas. I would suggest to Kizer that he spend his offseason with Jon Gruden like Cousins did to become better with in this system. The team overall would be better. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
Here is my plan:
49ers want Kirk, but are probably reluctant to give up the #2 pick. So, we trade Kirk to San Francisco for their 2nd and 3rd round picks this year, and their 1st and 2nd round picks next year. Then, this year, we flip one of our third round picks (plus an additional late rounder if it takes it) to Cincinnati for AJ McCarron (who is on the last year of his rookie deal). We extend him at a reasonable rate for three or four years (instead of waiting until after the season). Then, we use our 1st round pick to take Dalvin Cook or Leonard Fournette if they are there. If they aren't, we take best defensive player available. In the 2nd round, we use the two picks to find a stud wide receiver and another best defensive player available. With the money we free up by moving Kirk (which we should do now if we are going to do it - as soon as we have the trade arranged for AJ), we should use the cap savings and make a major push for one of the available free agent DL (Hankins, Logan, or Poe), and Dont'a Hightower. Maybe, if we free up more space by releasing Hall and Lauvao, we even make a push for TJ Lang. |
Re: You Got a Better Plan?
My plan: Hire a GM that can convince Kirk to stay. If that won't work, then fire Bruce so Kirk will stay. Without Kirk this team will be back to 5 wins.

Re: You Got a Better Plan?
Regardless of what BA is. You can't fire a team president because a diva(and at this point KC has become one in my eyes) wants him fired. That's the path back to DS being enmeshed in player personnel matters.

I personally think the report about him wanting Bruce fired is untrue. It also seems a little suspicious he signed the franchise tender as soon as Scott was fired. Moreover, it seems like the Kirk conjecture has stopped for now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: You Got a Better Plan?
I offer his a legitimate deal and if he refuses, I trade him to Cleveland for 1st this year or next year and a second this year or next year. Sign Jay Cutler as a back up to Colt. Draft a QB this year or next year. If he refuses to go anywhere other than SF. I bench him and tag him next year and he never plays again. I roll 8 - 10 million of this years salary cap to next year. This limits his contract damage next year.

Re: You Got a Better Plan?
Well, my plan fell apart fast in Free Agency. I only have one more idea.
I believe that SF would still love to have Kirk Cousins this season. If a split between Kirk and the Redskins is inevitable and SF still refuses to give up the #2 pick, then I'd try to make this deal with SF: They get Kirk and we get DeForest Buckner, SF's second round pick (#34), and SF's third round compensatory pick. Then I would draft BPA with a slight lean to the defensive side. If we can't get a deal done with SF, then I'd try to trade him elsewhere, such as to Cleveland, NYJ, or Houston. |
