Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Lost in the shuffle of the focus on Cousins, I think this is a legit question...

Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
YES, No questions asked
|
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Yes. Continuity for one is a good ingredient for success.
He has certainly been winning more than losing lately. I am even done with being mad at Barry. He is actually probably over achieving with this current D. Gruden seems above all to have these guys pumped up and playing as a team. No drama. |

Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Yes, I like some of his ballsy calls, but he has to do a
Better job on the 2 point conversions and stop the midfield crappy onside kicks, going for a 55 Yard field goal when the sun is in the kickers Face. He was a little reckless today. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Yes.
I'm a firm believer that the tag for Kirk was not only for him, but a testament to Jay. I think they go hand in hand. Of Jay is here for a long time, so will Kirk. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
He absolutely stays at this point.
It seems a lot of fans have forgotten the shape this team was in when he inherited it not too long ago. Aside from the tremendous improvement we've seen on the field the CULTURE has completely changed. Players on this team play with pride and heart, the way the sport is meant to be played. It's a joy to watch knowing they're not throwing in the towel. We've seen a winning formula across the league: Continuity. We have a good QB. We have a good Head Coach. We have an excellent GM. We have the framework set in place to be something special in the coming years. I've said this multiple times but this is STILL only year 2(!) of Scot McCloughan's rebuild. At this point we're OVER achieving. Years 3-5 are when you generally see the work of a new regime. Another off-season to focus on our Defensive side of the football. Another off-season for the offense to learn the playbook even more. Another off-season to add those veteran players that can contribute to the team. We're headed in a great direction and need to keep everyone in tact to see this thing through. Doing anything otherwise would be shooting ourselves in the foot for no apparent reason. HAIL |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Yes. But he has to think long and hard about keeping Barry.

Please see most post for yesterday.

I think it's about the tandem. As long as Gruden is the coach, KC will be our QB. KC is a good QB, but he excels in Gruden's system. While I think it is a little pass happy, it is still a good system. If the wheels fell off the wagon this year, and the Redskins had to find a new coach, would KC fit the new scheme? If they signed him to a long-term deal last year, they would have had to bring a new coach that runs a version of the west coast offense. Maybe that was part of the reason they brought in Callahan? Norv Turner is the last coach to make it more than fours years. In today's a lot of coaches do not make it more than 4 years. Jay is 16 in tenure, and I could see him moving up to 13th by the end of the season. It was a smart move not to sign KC to a long-term deal last year. They need to lock up Jay and Kirk and end the drama. The bigger question is Scot M and Jay. Do they mesh? Jay is about big boy smash mouth football and Jay is a complex passing offense. Can they mesh and work together for 4, 5, or 6 more years?
|
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Yes, yes and yes. Cousins and Gruden should stick around for a long time.

Yes, extend Gruden.
But replace the DC. |

Really? Is more like we need to fill holes in certain positions. I would replace Jenkins, maybe hood, Whitner, Blackmon, Hall, Bates add another ILB. I like Kerrigan, Smith, Murphy, Breeland. Some of our players are young and will get better. Lots of keepers. |

Gruden's selections of Def coordinators is my only concern with his coaching. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Three huge keys to any high functioning organization, 1) GM, 2) head coach, 3) quarterback.
We've got a good nucleus going. I still think KC is the higher priority this offseason, and you can still work on getting Gruden an extension too. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Jay and kirk are a peyton and brees like duo. Have to keep both. Mcvay will be gone after this yr most likely

49ers will be needing a HC after they fire Kelly, McVay's grandpa was an executive with the 49ers during the 80's early 90's. Just saying. |

I do like Murphy. Smith is looking more and more useless. Breeland is just ok if you can upgrade please do. Kerrigan- I would have to know what he is costing us exactly and again upgrade if possible. Edit: the bottom line was outside Norman and Cravens there is nobody I would really be upset to see go... |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
I won't be upset if Gruden isn't kept, especially if McVay leaves. That said, the Skins should make a reasonable effort to keep him.
I'm definitely in fan mode, and would like to see Gruden and Barry gone, (though I bet if Wade Phillips had been our D Coordinator I would love me some Gruden) I would love seeing Todd Bowles replace Barry as DC assuming he is gone from NYJ. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Bowles won't get fired after 1 bad season. Gruden is a good coach I want to keep him and Barry actually.

Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
I'm more sold on Kirk than I am Gruden...lol I'm not opposed to an extension, but I really really want a change at DC. I don't think he's(Barry) good enough to take us to the next level. (with or without the needed personnel)

Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Anyone talking about not keeping Gruden is crazy. You bring in another head coach and even with the foundation we have, it would still be a rebuilding phase with a new system and playbook. Gruden is a much (or more) responsible for our recent "success" as is Cousins or the GM.

I do think you keep him for stability sake, but there has to be at least the question about whether certain repeatable issues (penalties, end of half/game decisions, etc...) are directly on him and can be corrected. |

I think he will continue to grow and learn from his mistakes. |

Yeah and unless I'm forgetting something I don't think he's done anything that's egregiously unforgivable. He's done a very solid job. |

He's done a very solid job.
i remember when he was hired and his brother Jon Gruden said something along the lines of "just wait and see, he'll make a much better head coach than i ever dreamed of being" (paraphrased) . . . i am starting to think that he was right on this assessment as IMO Jay is growing leaps and bounds each year . . . i hope to have him and Cousins her for a long time. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Him and KC have what it takes to win a Superbowl with this passing attack. A lot like when the Saints won, or even Manning and the Colts. They both won championships through the air. We just need to bolster the defense a little bit and sure up our run game. Hopefully Fat Rob is the guy but whayever. I am very curious to see how this potential playoff run unfolds, but as of right now our HC/QB air attack is second to nobody.
|
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Can't can anyone. For one thing,
Gruden and co have delivered. Yeah the defense is mediocre, but the personnel are hacks or rooks for the most part sans Norman and Kerrigan. Next point is, who are you going to get to replace Gruden? Rehire Norv? We need a HC that is going to stick around and entrench a winning system. Barry gets a pass until we land a stud DT or two, plus a run stopper LB. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Yes, extend Gruden for sure. I agree that Barry should get another year because his cupboard is bare. We need upgrades at DL, ILB & S at a minimum before he can be fairly evaluated.
|
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Nope, guy might lead us to b2b playoff seasons for the first time in 25 years but we shouldn't extend him. I agree that I would look at upgrading from Barry but I won't let that hold me back. Also I reserve the right to change my opinion if our stud o-coordinator leaves after the season and he hires someone who's the Barry of offense coordinators to replace him lol.

Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
Truth is we are loaded at offense not so much On the D side..and the results show it. Barry has done well with the talent but its time to sign cousins, hope that Doctson is for real and load up on the D!! The real pressure is going to be on who to keep and for how much..we will see about the front office this offseason.going to be interesting..for now we need to win 4 out of last five! Gruden is doing fine ..i would extend him for sure.

I agree. Doctson better stay healthy, but I still would look for another wide out even if we sign a UFA. |

I would flip that thinking around a bit and ask you if you think Joe Barry has shown any ability to elevate the defense beyond its talent level? I have seen no such evidence, meaning it will take top 5 talent to generate a top 5 defense. By the same token he doesn't have this group underachieving. So I conclude he's "meh". If you think there's a better, no brainer D Coordinator candidate on the market this offseason, you have to make the move. Super Bowl winners manage to get more than the sum of their parts. So far Barry hasn't shown that ability. |
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
I do agree he doesn't have players playing better than their abilities. Look at both Philly and Dallas, Philly had the talent, but underachieved. New coach comes in and they play great. Dallas doesn't have the talent, but their coordinator putting them in position to do well.
|
Re: Should the Redskins Extend Jay Gruden’s Contract?
One area Gruden needs to improve on is his game management skills. They're sub par at best.
