The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Well,
12 hours have passed. Still disgusted at the outcome. There was so MUCH ugly in yesterday's game, I won't delve deep into the muck and mire, just give my top 3 UGLY's, which likely mirrors everyone else's.

DJax Fumble
3 turnovers = 3points
Allowing the last return to come out of the endzone.
Those were things that bottom dwelling teams do, and yes, that's who we are. Then there was a slew of Bad things, and in no particular order, they include; Jordan Reed's penalties, Phantom penalties, the sleep walking start that seems to be involved with every primetime or away game (maybe JG needs to be drinking a gallon of Red Bull an hour before the game, but the ref's might penalize him for using unauthorized wings), the FEDEX Field Technical glitches - seriously can the Skins not give national media funny fodder every time we have a home game, the defense giving up the ghost in the last 44 seconds - did everyone say we left too much time on the clock when we scored because I know I did. And a whole bunch more when you lose to a 3-8 team. As hard as it is, I want to spotlight a couple good things - This is NOT intended as a rah-rah because, well, we frickin lost to a 3-8 dallas team that hadn't won without TR... but Dallas only converted 1 of 9 3rd downs KC did not throw any interceptions, covered up his fumble, and he didn't take bad sacks (ie ones that pushed us out of FG range even though Dallas got to him nearly every time). In fact I think had DJax not gone all cray cray KC would have led a sustained drive to give us the win. Once the Red Bull kicked in, we started moving the ball fairly effectively - First 4 drives:15 plays 13 yds (ugh), 0 points Next 4 drives:34 plays 164 yds , 9 points (included both bogus penalties) last 3 drives: 15 plays 83 yds, 7 points and a missed fg Back to KC, The D got 3 turnovers, even if the Offense didnt capitalize on them that still is a positive in the game. Ah well, back to being disgusted... |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
We still don't have an offense that can take advantage of turnovers caused by the defense.

Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Ugly: Generally unprepared on primetime, at home, with first place on the line.
bad: Special teams, you son of a bitch. Good: Defensively, I think this team played outstanding. |

Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
The good? Kirk Cousins was decent enough. He played well.
The Bad? The officiating. Nobody wanting to block Sean Lee. The Ugly? What do you think? Special teams and DJax's whatever it is he thought he could do on that punt return. Even Uglier? The Redskins go on the road in their next game. |

Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Good-
Joe Barry-Mason Foster-Def as a unit |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
I don't think that the ground can't cause a fumble is an actual part of the rulebook. In fact the NFL rules don't really go into much about it:
FUMBLE Article 3 Fumble. A fumble is any act, other than a pass or kick, which results in a loss of player possession.
|
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
The reality of last night is that we played just poorly enough to let a mediocre team hang around and get a last second win.
If we scored a TD at any point earlier in the game, there was no way Dallas was going to comeback to tie/win. Their offense was hapless the entire game outside of 1 big pass play at the end. We had chance after chance to do something/anything on offense and couldn't do anything, didn't adjust to anything Dallas was doing etc etc etc. Losing division games are always tough, but this was just embarrassing. The Cowboys had no business even being in the game with the way they turned the ball over. |

Really? How many times have you heard announcers say that over the years? Its got to be a rule |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
It's NOT a rule. It's one of those short hand things. The more accurate way to say it is: "Once the ground causes you to be down, it cannot also cause a fumble."
If you hit the ground with your hand ONLY and no other part of the body (elbow, knee, butt), and the ball comes out, it's a fumble (That's what happened with DJax). Since most of the time, when you hit the ground you are down, the ball coming out is not a fumble. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Gud: There is nothing good to speak about after losing at home to a 3-8 team without their starting QB on national television.
Bad: See Gud. UGLY: Offense, Defense, Special Teams, IT department A look ahead: 0-5 record on the road this year, and 3 of the last 4 games are on the road. Yay! |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Good = defense all around, u can't ask for much more the last 2 weeks. This unit has stepped up. Kirk cousins in the 4th qtr.
Bad= offense all around especially o line which is unusual. Djax wtf man?? Jordan reed wtf where has he gone? Ugly= wow special teams sucked and especially on the last kickoff smh. And how do u lose to the Cowboys at home on mnf without romo??? |

That's why these division games are rarely like Vegas would say. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
AFAIC the Jackson fumble was 7/10s the reason we lost.
It was tied with 1:47 left when he coughed it up. We were moving the ball a decent bit before that. Gain 45 more yards, kick the field goal and we win. I really dont care that he got a TD after that. The eff up was a ginormous game changer. Jackson gifted the Cowboys a TD in a game commanded by field goals. The defense was decent but the pass pressure was very inconsistent, only one sack but considering our injuries and newbies it aint all bad. Cousins - played pretty decent. I have been on the fence as whether to anoint him as our "starting caliber" QB next year. I've almost fallen off the fence. I would expect to be off that fence by seasons end. I hope so.... The running game - What running game? The other 3/10s why we lost. I wish we had all our starting Oline guys back. We got penalized 73 yards...WTF...thats enough yards for a scoring drive. (although 2 of them were utter horseshit, especially the Grant clip) I'm going to be pissed about this game for a long time. And as soon as the football year begins (2016) I would trade Wrongway Jackson. Get him the feck off this team. (Hes contracted thru 2016, right?) |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Bad and Ugly:
Play calling and/or coaching. Cowboys vs. Redskins - Box Score - December 7, 2015 - ESPN Averaging 2.8 yards per carry. DY had zero offensive snaps. Cooley and Portis are saying on the radio today, put our best 11 players on the field. Screw the packages, put our best players on the field. Tom Compton and Ty Nseke aren't our best players. If the LBs and ends are crashing, why wouldn't we call boot till they stopped crashing. Good: Echo some of the other posts. Chris Baker and the rest of the D. Really liked the energy they brought. Everybody was hitting and ball hawking. They truly looked like a different team out there on D last night. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Cooley and CP are dead on. That formation was pure shit and the Cowboys blew it up on both 2nd and 3rd and 1 that killed a drive. During that drive leave in your regular personnel. 2nd and 1 is the best down for a deep play action pass. Instead they put in that stupid formation. Why??? Wanted to put my fist through the tv screen. Just atrocious play calling. Perfect example of Gruden calling plays to just get first downs. It was the same shit last week.,
I have little confidence in Gruden as a game planner, play caller and someone that can make adjustments. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Gruden and McVay were calling the game as if they expected Dallas to play so bad that it wouldn't matter how little the offense produced and it almost worked because of our defense and yes, how bad Dallas was on offense.
The offense had so many opportunities to put the game out of reach early. I can't stand games like these where the opponent is playing so bad that you know it's just going to take a TD early on to end their night, but you just can't get it done. If we convert one of those turnovers into a TD, and another one into a FG, Dallas is toast. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
The Redskins are just like the ride requirement at the carnival........
You must be "this tall" to ride this ride. We're not quite up to the line yet. But SM and another year, we'll be taller......httr |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
My main gripe with gruden is the lack of a killer instinct. It just seems that he wants to play the patience game throughout and only go for the kill if the game is ending.

Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
I was all for bringing him back but idk now. His pussy ass offense and his unwillingness to change it is really concerning. We probably lead the league in 2nd and 10 or longer. And not using DY at all when you're averaging a whopping 2 yards a carry is just ridiculous.

Also, last time I checked, DY does a decent job at pass protection and does a good job at catching the ball. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
I think with Jordan Reed, they might as well have him drop 10 or 15 lbs during the off season and move him to wr. He can't block a girl, none the less NFL LB.'s.

I don't get it. Matt Jones is a weapon catching the ball as well. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
So Mason Foster comes in off the street and plays better than Compton, Robinson and Riley have all year?
Folks, We have a serious problem at ILB. Expect McC to completely rebuild ILB spot this offseason. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Not to mention Dunbar coming off the street as a former WR and playing at least as good as some other defenders.
|
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
When you're building a team, you keep bringing in people until you find some who can play. I don't want that to ever stop.
The biggest deficiency at both ILB and OLB is lack of speed. That was highlighted by playing Mason Foster. He made plays that our other LB's can't make because he's fast and they aren't. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
The bad/ugly is the bullshit running gameplan.
Jay is about as enthusiastic about the running game as a kid being told to eat their peas and it shows in the predictability and lack of creativity. Jay and staff have been repeating the same mind numbingly obvious mistakes since preseason. Telegraphing run tendencies based on personnel and formation. Telegraphing based on down and distance. I am tired of hearing the excuses about personnel, lack of blocking TEs etc. They have known about these short coming since preseason! I hate hearing about excuses about TEs/short yardage when you turned one the best blocking FBs(decent short yardage runner and receiver) in the NFL into a bystander. The run game is a disgrace. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Has anyone covering the Redskins asked Gruden why he doesn't use DY more, and, if so, what has the response been? Seems a no brainer to do it, and yet it seems like Gruden has had a free pass on failing to use him. I know the FB position isn't sexy. But averaging more than 2.8 YPC sure is.
|
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
My understanding, but I don't remember where its from, is that Callahan doesn't use the fullback.

Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Not sure if DY can solve the running game issues. Putting a fullback in front of the RB might help here and there, but we'll still have Lerib and Long getting blown up every other down.
Personally this running game has been a failure for the most part. Every week it's the same shit and we're averaging 2.0 a carry? SMH. I'd go with more of a pass first offense the rest of the way and stop beating your head against a wall. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
My understanding, but I don't remember where its from, is that Callahan doesn't use the fullback.
Yeah, I think it was Cooley?
I looked it up just to check though. Last year the Cowboys used a FB on 14.2% of their snaps vs this year where Jay/McVay/Bill are at 8.7%. Imho even if Jay/McVay/Bill don't "like" to use a FB they should still cater to their personnel and be flexible in their schemes/gameplans. If they "like" to use 2+ TEs in some sets that's fine. But if we don't have the TEs capable to effectively block and provide a credible receiving threat then it shouldn't matter how much they like those sets. And we have a FB who is a great blocker, decent receiving threat and runner. They should be flexible/creative enough to adjust those plays/sets/formation and replace a TE with DY.
Not sure if DY can solve the running game issues. Putting a fullback in front of the RB might help here and there, but we'll still have Lerib and Long getting blown up every other down.
The run game issues are systemic. I don't think DY will solve the running game problems by himself either. But I believe he can certainly help. Its not even speculation really, there is historical data to support it. And imo you don't need to be Joe Jackson Gibbs to move some of the plays Jay and staff like and run them from I-Form/Offset-I/Pistol-I etc...
Personally this running game has been a failure for the most part. Every week it's the same shit and we're averaging 2.0 a carry? SMH. I'd go with more of a pass first offense the rest of the way and stop beating your head against a wall.
I would prefer we fix the issues with the run game before we quit on it. Its one thing if everything in the running was happening at an optimal level yet we still couldn't run. But, to me it at least, we are repeating the several mistakes that cause the run game to stuggle. Now if you turn some of the 1st down runs into passes I'm all for that but it most also mean some 2nd down passes become runs. In 2012 Kyle passed alot on 1st down yet was still top 5 in rushing. Some one needs to let Jay know you don't gain run balance by being heavy handed with the run on 1st down. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
Offense sucked balls. Djax is a complete moron. Marinelli handed Gruden/McVay/Callahan their asses in game planning and adjustments. Special teams sucked balls.
Defense at least came to play. Still didn't pressure Cassell enough though. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
People forget too that DY is an underrated "threat" as a FB. I used that in quotations because a FB is only going to be so much of a weapon in the passing game, but as far as FB's go, it seems like every pass he has every caught has done damage.
Why not send him in motion out of the backfield a few times a game, create some confusion for the opposing defense. There is no excuse for DY to be standing on the sideline twiddling his thumbs. |
Re: The UGLY, the Bad and the gud
DY had something like a 63 yard TD reception last year.
