Jacoby Jones
After seeing Brandon Banks struggle all year it really pains my heart to watch Jacoby Jones on the Ravens.
With his ties to Kyle I would have hoped he had come here and we had lost out on Ed Royal so there was need(plus cut BB if we had signed JJ). Maybe he wanted to play for a instant winner but I hate to think we had no interest in him. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
I've been thinking the same thing.

Cant have them all.

I understand that but he seemed very attainable. IMO that was a misfire by the front office. Banks honestly needs to hit the bricks, he brings zero positives to this team. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
I keep getting down on Banks, but they keep using him more and more in the offense (granted he only played in 9 snaps out of 65 according to one of the bloggers that does snap counts), and I think he does force the defense to account for him on plays like reverses and end arounds.
Overall, it still amazes me that as this offense runs at levels of efficiency and stats and points that Skins fans haven't seen in over a decade, we keep looking at other players with Grass is greener eyes. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
Seems like at least once a game Banks makes a bad decision on a return. Like the punt against Dallas he should have let go over his head. Instead he fields it and we get pinned deep. He's got to get stuff like that cleaned up. I'd like to see what Paul can do on kick returns. He's physical and doesn't dance around. I think Banks' problem is he's always looking for the homerun instead of taking a double when it's there.

Honey Badger would solve our return problems next year

He can't stop smoking weed and has sat on his ass this entire season. If he's sitting around in the 5th round or later I'd say the value is there. |

With Banks on the field it seems like the defense is taking notice and that opens things up for other guys. Yeah he messed up in the Dallas game but he can correct that. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
I think we have plenty of options on the roster now to adequately handle the duties w/out having to pay FA money to a specialist - Paul (KR), Robinson (PR/KR), Moss (PR), Crawford (PR).
To me, this represents the difference between this regime and others and demonstrates the shortsightedness of fans. As to this regime, instead of going after a shiny RFA/UFA like Leon Washington, Shanny is growing these emminently replaceable parts from late round picks. Giving them the opportunity to grow in the pro game while contributing. We have invested a lot of picks in young talent over the last couple years. Give these guys a couple years to take advantage of an opportunity to step up before we go looking for expensive alternatives. Few rookies outside the first three rounds start their first or second year (I actually did the research on that for another thread sometime ago). At the same time, there are a lot of starters in this league who came on in their third or fourth year. You figure a lot of these guys are coming out of college before their physical prime of 25-29 and aren't able to compete with more experienced men in their prime who are roughly their talent equivalent. It simply takes time to build quality depth, I think Shanny recognizes this and is essentially waiting for his players to matriculate to starting caliber. Another thing this does is keep the young talent here. One of the constant complaints that I remember from the <shudder> Vinny Years is vets saying only the folks who came from other teams got paid - hence, we lose players like Antonio Pierce, Ryan Clark and countless others who might have provided depth over the long run. We don't need other people's Jacoby Jones's, what we need is to find our own Jacoby Jones while grooming his back up. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
Jones turned us down twice if I recall correctly. Once after 2011 and then again this summer. Took more money from us to play elsewhere. Happens sometimes
Banks has gots to go though |

I was thinking more along the lines of UDFA..but 5-7 is good too. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
Lets be real - if you were an NFL wide receiver, would you have wanted to come to the redskins to catch passes from a rookie or a pro-bowler? Also consider the redskins organization has a recent history of losing and general dysfunction.
RGIII has changed all that, though. In the past, it seems alot of times the only reason we got certainplayers to come here was because we offered them more money than other teams. Now that other NFL players have seen what he can do, they'll WANT to come here. Offensive players will want to play with RGIII. Defensive players will want to be on a team where they dont have to worry about the offense putting them in big holes. They may even take less money to come to HERE... that will be a nice change. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
i really root for bb, but he's just not cutting the mustard.
i really root for bb, but he's just not cutting the mustard.
Me too. So much speed. But he's quick of feet..slow of mind apparently. He just doesn't seem to get it and it's really a shame. He could be such a playmaker but he makes too many bad decisions and seems to have a hard time grasping what he's suppose to be doing as a WR. He does pose a threat and has to be accounted for when he's on the field...but just imagine if he was actually good at it. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
I root for Banks every time he touches the ball (he's exactly my size -- 5'7", 155 -- so it's pretty much a necessity), and he's so fast, it's surprising to me he hasn't been able to break one for a TD yet. But I also hold my breath thinking that it won't take much of a whack for the ball to come loose.

Re: Jacoby Jones
I've been a huge Brandon Banks fan since he's been on the Redskins and I've argued for him and stood up for him on these boards. But I'm beginning to see what a lot of Redskins fans see and that is Banks lack of explosion. The great kickoff/punt returners we've had here in the past were explosive. Darrell Green, Brian Mitchell, Mike Nelms, Santana Moss, etc. Banks has speed but he's not explosive. His decisions to either let the ball bounce into the end zone or return it could have hurt the Redskins last Thursday. I would be more comfortable with Santana Moss returning punts.

Re: Jacoby Jones
I think just about everybody loved Banks at first. He's turned out to be nothing special, which is bad enough without his terrible decision making.
I was glad we didnt sign Jacoby,I watched a lot of Texans games and was not impressed,he was very inconsistant.I dont know what kind of receiving yr he's had,but he's def been better than Banks in the return dept |
Re: Jacoby Jones
Have we tried A. Robinson back there? Seems like he might have something to offer. Can't get any worse than Banks is doing right now. It reminds me of when Randle El was at the latter stages of returning punts. Dance - dance - down...
NO question he has the ability, but either our return team isn't giving him any holes, or he just can't make a decision....either way, something has to change. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
i think robinson and paul could handle kicks
and moss could handle punts |
Re: Jacoby Jones
had another great catch!
|
Re: Jacoby Jones
There was nothing spectacular about the catch. He was wide open on a blown coverage.

Oooo...somehting shiny!
Pass on Jones....a dedicated roster spot for a returner is in the twilight. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
There was nothing spectacular about the catch. He was wide open on a blown coverage.
He had to adjust to a not-so-greatly thrown ball. Honestly, if the Denver DBs cover that well, it could have been a pick. With JJ's speed (and Torrey Smith's) I don't know why the Denver DBs did such a terrible job with coverage.
Oooo...somehting shiny! Pass on Jones....a dedicated roster spot for a returner is in the twilight.
Jones actually catches the ball and contributes to the offense. With him it is not a situation where you are dedicating a roster spot for a returner. |

Nope. Not tough at all. R. Crawford/N. Paul or J. Jones? Much tougher. Jones didn't want to come here for more money than he got in Baltimore. Why is this even an issue? |

Brandon Banks is good as gone. I'll be surprised if they even bring him into training camp to compete. |

True that. Who else ya gonna get in the 5th to 7th round. |
True that. Who else ya gonna get in the 5th to 7th round.
depth, depth, depth. Marques Wilson WR Ex-Washington St is very very intriguing prospect to get in the later rounds, he was projected to go in the first round until he got booted off the team with a dispute with mike leach who has a history of ticking players off. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
Btw Skins fans Jacoby Jones contract with the ravens 2 years $7 million.
All he did was have 1 punt return, 2 kick returns, 1 receiving TD, and in the playoffs: 2 TDs (1 of those was a clutch game winning TD catch) receiving, and 1 kick return in the super bowl for a TD. |

Great draft for depth. Depth wins championships. Look at the Ravens this year. or the Giants last year. You are not going to have the same 22 starting every week. |

In recent memory, I don't that I've even seen Devin Hester produce like Jones did. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
Just like a quarterback with an offense, a think a kick returner gets too much blame when the unit does poorly and too much praise when it does well. Granted, Banks has made some boneheaded decisions, but there are ten other guys on the field who are supposed to be opening up lanes for him as well as a coach who should be designing schemes. Remember when we signed Chad Morton? He had been enjoying a lot of success returning kicks for the Jets; we signed him expecting to see the same level of success. Didn't work out that way. Hopefully the team will focus on building a better return unit instead of looking to just replace BB.

Re: Jacoby Jones
Jones should have been the MVP last night.
Flacco was good but lets be honest...with his WRs, especially Bolden, all he has to do it put the ball in the air and they go get it. His throws can be way off and Bolden will beat everyone, including gravity, to the ball. |

Third and a half a yard to go and he throws a pass to Boldin who simply makes a incredible grab. Ballsy. I think Flacco played very well last night, but his WRs made him look better than what he should have. Some of his passes were thrown up for grabs and their WRs made the play on it. |
Re: Jacoby Jones
Yup. Flacco played well and I don't begrudge him. But I would have given the MVP to Jones or Boldin.
