Super Lin-tendo!

I'm kinda a passive follower of the NBA, but man, what a great story! Never got drafted, sent to the D league numerous times, almost cut before this season. Now an NBA super star for the moment.

He has played 5 games (good ones) in a 82 game season. I don't understand the hype? I mean I can see Knicks fans being excited but otherwise I think a lot of it is the media needs something to hype and the NBA is desperate for hype.

That league is dead to me. How can NCAA basketball be so exciting and the NBA is just a step above WWE?

best story of the year in the NBA, always been a closet Knicks fan. I just think its funny Melo was suppose to the be the savior and this kid is the truth. Also it was nice to see Lin out play Kobe last friday night in the garden dropping 38 on his ass

Five good games??

Nobody has scored more points in his first five career starts SINCE THE MERGER. Not Jordan, not Kobe, not Shaq, nobody.

Last night was my third time watching him play. I almost fell off the bar stool when he hit that three. He'll probably fall back to earth, so to speak, but the kid is a really good basketball player.

Oh, he was in the Wizards camp too.

Regardless of whether he's forgotten in a year, which I seriously doubt, why dismiss what he's accomplished these past several games? It's a historic performance.

Doubt it. How could he be worse going forward than other very good players at his position like Jrue Holiday and Ty Lawson? He'll at least outpace them.

You're probably right in saying he won't sustain this level of Rajon Rondo/Derrick Rose ish production. But he doesn't need to do that to keep the Knicks winning. He doesn't even need to be Steve Nash. It's all up to Carmelo, if he meshes with Lin and changes his ball-hog mindset, that team will run deep in the playoffs.

You might forget his name because you're not an NBA fan. I don't see how he drops out of the sport world's consciousness, though.

ESPN statement on offensive Jeremy Lin comments - ESPN
At ESPN we are aware of three offensive and inappropriate comments made on ESPN outlets during our coverage of Jeremy Lin.

Saturday we apologized for two references. We have since learned of a similar reference Friday on ESPN Radio New York. The incidents were separate and different. We have engaged in a thorough review of all three and have taken the following action:

• The ESPN employee responsible for our Mobile headline has been dismissed.

• The ESPNEWS anchor has been suspended for 30 days.

• The radio commentator is not an ESPN employee.

We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.
All appropriate steps IMO. Who was the ESPNN anchor though?

Re: Super Lin-tendo!

It should be noted that the editor has claimed it was a honest mistake and it looks like most people believe him. Perhaps he was so not-racist that he was mistaken for being racist. I guess you have to think like a racist now-a-days to not be a racist. If it was truly accidental i dont think he should have been fired. At the end of the day he is an editor and he should know that stuff, but with so much PCness out there people are going to make unintentional mistakes.
The former ESPN employee, Anthony Frederico, responsible for publishing the offensive headline spoke with the Daily News, both to apologize for any harm done but also to claim that he had not used the phrase with any racial motivation.

This had nothing to do with me being cute or punny," Anthony Federico told the Daily News. "I'm so sorry that I offended people. I'm so sorry if I offended Jeremy."

Frederico claimed to the Daily News that his choice of the oft-used sports cliche was an "honest mistake" and not intended to make light of a racial slur used against Asians.
I agree with mredskins. Obviously its real athletic competition but the NBA is about as entertainment oriented as a sport can get, before falling into a different category. I love basketball and can watch college all day. I can watch classic NBA games. I can watch olympic basketball. I cant watch NBA.

I don’t think Plaschke nails anything.

Hes using a stereotype, that Asians wont push back because they’re not a vocal minority, for his argument as to why stereotypes against Asian Americans seem to be more acceptable. Asian Americans, and the Chinese/Taiwanese in particular, are the “model minority” in the US, and can be considered one of the most “successful” racial groups within the US by many measures. Their average incomes are greater than the US population at large, they are the most educated and they are the least incarcerated. So perhaps being at the top of the US food chain, so to speak, makes it okay in some people’s mind to playfully stereotype them. Of all the disgraceful and distasteful stereotypes cast at Lin I don’t remember hearing or seeing any that were actually hateful or mean spirited, many may have been ignorant and dumb but I don’t think any were cast with malice. However, Asian Americans are also a pretty small population so Plaschke may have a point in that they are unable to vocally defend themselves, but I would be hesitant to imply its because they lack ability or motive as a people.

I thought about if the ESPN guy should have been fired last night and although I think the termination was severe i understand it. At the end of the day he is an editor and its his responsibility not to print written word that can be misconstrued. The racial pun in the headline could have been a terrible one but it was made completely by accident. People who caught it and thought something that hateful could have been printed on purpose are either overly sensitive or racist towards Asians. But ESPN, like all media outlets, cater to everyone including the overly sensitive and its an editors responsibility to best represent and protect his employer with all viewers. Unfortunately with the over PCness in our country he needs to be perfect when putting something into print.

I completely disagree with the suspension of Max Bretos. Just watch and listen to it, nothing should be misinterpreted by what he said and how he said it. Its ridiculous that certain phrases cant be used in conjunction with certain people. If we are all walking around thinking about stereotypes we need to avoid when speaking all were doing is stereotyping people internally. Its one thing to type something and catch a mistake before you publish it, it’s another to say something with no ill intentions in a none defamatory way and get in trouble for it. Its ridiculous. Also apparently Max Bretos’s wife is Asian American. I guess she should consider divorcing him if using the same judgment employed by ESPN.
