Stifling States of America: Heat Wave!

The next few days are bringing some serious heat to large portions of the country, including here in the DC area where the heat index on Friday is expected to climb to 116 freaking degrees.

So aside from being hot, how is the heat wave affecting you? How are you going to be spending your weekend?

Are the Himalaya's by any chance on the Carolina/Virginia border?
If not, your........gonna be real hot.

re: Stifling States of America: Heat Wave!

Yeah i've been hearing that this might be the worst heat wave since the 1930's around here. I had 99 degrees in the back yard today. It says it might be 105 tomorrow, with the heat index feeling like about 111 degrees. That's gonna be pretty bad here because the humidity is so freaking high. You are almost walking around in a fog now the last few days.

Actually for serious, if you're going to drink on that camping trip make sure you don't pass out in the sun. Talk about a sucky way to die.

Re: Stifling States of America: Heat Wave!

I have to work Fri-Sun, but thankfully it will be indoors in air conditioned grocery stores. And when I won't be working, I'll be indoors elsewhere in places with a/c. The only time I'm planning on spending outdoors this weekend is the time it'll take to walk from buildings to my car lol. This heat is gonna suck.

Re: Stifling States of America: Heat Wave!

Its nasty here in west Michigan. The air outside this morning is like my grandmas closet.
I took a vacation day tomorrow just to dodge the heat at work.

Don't be stupid, cancel the camping trip. Keep yourself inside and turn up the air conditioner.

This. Now is not the time to relive the lives of our ancestors. AC was invented and popularized for one reason...IT WORKS!! Stick to it. The outdoors will still be there later when it is cooler I promise.

Re: Stifling States of America: Heat Wave!

I have to work at a farmer's market Sat. from 6:30 - 12:30. I'll be in the shade and, hopefully, it will be early enough so that I avoid the most brutal stuff. Other than that, it's inside and AC cranking.

As for your camping trip, just to reiterate what the others said - if you can reschedule, do so. Don't drink alchohol to cool yourself off. Wear a cap of some type, keep your head cool as you can (wet rag, etc.). Water, water, water and more water.

In the US, from 1979 - 2006, only extreme cold has killed more people than extreme heat. Extreme heat has killed more people than flooding, lightning, tornadoes & hurricanes combined.

I remember those days camping. At about 7 in the morning the sun will have your tent at about 80 and by 8 am it will be about 90. Last time I went camping I was brushing my teeth in one of those camp site bath rooms and I had one guy blowing one out and another guy doing god knows what in the other stall. I was hung over and start gagging. I marched out of the bath room told the wife (then girl friend) to get her stuff together I was done camping. Packed up our stuff turned to some dude asked him if he wanted a tent and some camping gear and got my ass out of there. F*&k Camping.

LOL! That made me laugh. The only time that I camped when it was really hot was at Woodstock 1999. The heat in my opinion was the driving force of the riots.

I haven't camped since my senior year of high school. I have a lot of friends that love it, but at this point in my life give me a nice comfy hotel room any day.

When you hit a certain age camping is only for the cheap people who try to explain why camping is so great. This is whats so great about camping. If you neighbor wakes up they wake you up. If you neighbor wants to party all night they keep you awake all night. When the sun comes up in the morning your tent turns into a oven. Public bathrooms (enough said). You have to try and keep all your food out of the cooler water and ice. You have to spend and hour preparing to just cook something and then spend 1/2 hour cleaning up. Public bathrooms (you cannot say that one enough). The Mr. I know how to do everthing trying to tell you how to set up camp (every camp site has one). The sand and dirt that gets into your tent and just trying to live out of a tent in general. Public Bathrooms. Have fun CHICO23231 and remember to check the stalls before you begin to brush your teeth.

Everyone pitch in for a hotel room nearby, move the beds out into the hallway/parking lot and pitch tents. Crank AC up and enjoy.

Going to a crab feast on Saturday, work function for wife. It starts at 1pm. I plan on eating as many crabs as i can in a short amount of time so we can get back in the AC of my minivan for the ride back home. The host lives on the bay, and does have a pool, but i don't think it's going to matter on Saturday.

LOL! You have me laughing today!

As far as dirt in the tent I always start saying, "hey who keeps tracking the dirt out of the tent" becasue by the second day you have more dirt in the tent then outside it.

It's supposed to "cool" off this weekend. Hopefully, it won't be too bad for those that don't have AC. I remember growing up w/o it. Some of those hot nights were miserable to try to get some sleep.

My boys and I always loved camping, especially the Smoky Mountains.
However, I remember a couple nights at Mammoth Cave when it was still in the 90's at night in a pop up camper. It was so humid that when you rolled over the sleeping bag would stick to you. It was a nice 55 deg down in the caves though.

I can remember growing up in Rhode Island and we didn't have A/C becasue basically it was like 3 weeks that you need it. God those 3 weeks were long though. I can remeebr waking up and my sheet felt like someone had wrapped me up in a wram paper towel to sleep in. You would literally peel it off yourself in the morning.

I have never done any cat fishing. You should come down some time and we could go fishing. I could pick you up around the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and we could head over to the CBBT and go flounder fishing.

Well, the heat index in DC tomorrow is about 12 degrees higher than in the Phoenix area. Just saying. 117 is nothing to sneeze at. Plus we're higher than 50% humidity. Child's play it is not.

Re: Stifling States of America: Heat Wave!

My family from south Alabama reguarly experience heat much higher than this, but the difference is that they don't have the high humidity like we always have around here. My friend from College was from Arizona. He said 110 was nothing because it was so dry. Also some nights people would run their fireplaces/heat because it would get so cold at night. Crazy....

50% Humidity?? I would pray for that. You may laugh at us for bitching about the heat, but let a foot of snow fall in Phoenix and lets see how you deal with that. It's all relative.

At the same time, 111 is hot no matter how you cut it.

One of the commentaries I saw was that, although the heat was essentially the same throughout the affected area, the danger was highest in those areas where the temps were high above norms (think S. Dakota at 100 degrees for example).

No matter how you cut it. It's f'ing hot. Right now, it's 7:00 a.m., 90 degrees, with 65% humidity and a heat index of 101. It's going to be ugly today folks.
