The Pre-season and the lockout.
So lets say the lockout drags on a bit more.
I keep hearing that the preseason will be affected if a deal isnt done by July 15th. So does that mean just one preseason game? Can we have a season with just two or three preseason games? If we drop a preseason game do we have to shorten the regular season? Is there a drop dead date that will affect the regular season? I'm not necessarily pestering everyone with questions, just looking for discussion on this....and I am quite curious how the schedule can/could be altered. |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
Sure they could shorten the preseason without it impacting the regular season.
My opinion is a deal gets done in the next week. Some of the latest rumors seem to be hinting a deal is close. |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
Really, the first casualty will be the Hall of Fame game. Which would be a big black mark on the whole thing, even though the HOF game usually blows.
Really, there could be three preseason games and nothing of consequence would change. It just makes it harder to evaluate talent in game situations and what guys u do and don't want to keep on the 53 man roster. |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
I would imagine they have an idea as to how far they could shorten practice (probably 1 week), and then they most likely would start chopping preseason games, then chopping actual games. An interesting option I've heard is if they have to chop all preseason games then they might run the regular schedule allowing the teams to keep all their players until Oct. which then all teams would have to be down to the required number.
I think that would be cool because if your team is up by a nice margin, or loosing miserably then they could stick in the Rookies for a longer look in actual games. The only bad issue would be if all your games are close and you can't afford to throw them out there, then I guess the team would have to make some decisions. If your looking for actual dates though July 15 is the first I've heard of so far which would effect preseason. |

Owners and players don't want to get out there to make sure everyone is healthy and ready to play the opener. It's really to get that money |

Yep too much money at stake, which is why they'll get a deal done. |

..Well I want to see the good in everyone and forget this whole thing is mostly about greed, so I'm going to ignore you and say my way is right. :-) |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
I got together with the "core" of our fantasy football league a couple weeks ago at a bbq...man we are chomping at the bit to secure a date for a draft. Preseason is kinda pivotal for us evaluating talent as well. A buddy of mine who blogs for a Raiders site said they were told them no way in hell owners are gonna just lose this year's preseason games, that the preferable action would be sliding the season back first before any cancelation of games.

:-)
Funny how money and greed effect sport: in France this season a rugby club was taken several points in the standings because they hadn't enough money, and now we're talking about loosing nfl games because there's too much money |

Slide the season back? Hmmmm....that would be interesting. I hope thats an avenue vs losing regular games. |

We trust you to be correct...the addiction is becoming epidemic. |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
According to the breakfast links on the NFC East blog on ESPN it comes out of the redskins park the lockout is ending sunday which he said was very believable.

Dude, you could be a psychic! If it happens, you need to tell all of us who will be in the SB and who will win. Then I'm placing my bets. ;) |

Well you really didn't try to back up your statement, so I don't see why a smart alec reply wouldn't have been expected. Heck, I would imagine there were more that weren't actually posted, but maybe not. and for the record, I agree with you that now thru the 13th seems like when a deal needs to be done by. (as for SBXVII's statement, it doesn't take a psychic to know that the Skins will win it all in this lockout year) |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
Im guessing it will be friday or Sunday. Both make sense for a big anouncement like that

Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
So far no one has lost any money in this mess - - except for the legal fees both sides have incurred for the lawsuits. That may be a lot of money to all of us, but for the NFL and the NFLPA, that is chump-change.
Actually, the owners have saved some money so far by laying off team staff - - not paying them - - and by not incurring the expenses associated with OTAs and mini-camps. Amazingly, the owners as a whole probably are ahead of the game financially as of today. If the first exhibition game has to be cancelled, then owners lose money AND players lose money because the revenues from exhibition games are part of what they are arguing about in terms of a split. If 2 exhibition games are cancelled, more money is lost. When revenue is lost, people start to pay a lot more attention to the solution to the problem and not to the problem areas in some kind of theoretical construct. Someone asked about a date beyond which the regular season will be affected. The regular season will start the week after Labor Day. Teams will need an absolute minimum of 10 days to assemble rosters by signing draftees and free agents and undrafted collegiate free agents. Then they will need at least 2 weeks of "camp" to be ready to put a product on the field that might resemble NFL football. If that is all they get, look for early season games to resemble high school games in terms of execution. That minimum time comes to 24 days. Count back from the week after Labor Day and you have your "drop-dead date". My guess remains that a deal is done between 12 and 15 July and that camps will all be in session by 28-30 July and the regular season will start on time. |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
There seems to be some general consensus apparently that missing the HOF game would not be all that devastating, beyond the PR implication. So that July 15 deadline we've been hearing could actually be a few days later.
They are so, so, close to a deal though. Only problem is they've been so close for so long. Let's see if tomorrow and Friday get us past the goal line. |
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
I hope Judge Boyle's vacation plans don't derail the talks (he's supposed to go on vacation on Saturday).

Any word on how the negotiations are going, Smoots? I'm hoping to get this thing resolved by the weekend.

Incarcerated Bob's an interesting dude. I remember him ranting and raving when we got Bin Laden saying this was old news, that we killed him in 2005..but I digress,

Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
Aside from any lost revenue as a result of this protracted lockout, these are the guys who will suffer the most where the game itself is concerned. With limited time to impress the coaches and comprehend a complicated system true talents in some cases will not have enough time to be put on display.

Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
Not to mention that none of these rookies are signed yet.
|
Re: The Pre-season and the lockout.
It's going to be an insane couple of weeks once this deal gets done.
I'm sure every team has a plan and is ready to dive in head first. There's probably going to be a lot of 16 hour days going on around the league to get free agents, drafted, & undrafted rookies signed. |
