Ramsey named 05' Starter

Hell F'n Yeah!!!! |
WOW, I really didn't expect this to happen until after the season was over.
I'm very happy about this. Nice job Patrick! |
Here's the Post Article
Great news indeed |
It's about time somebody showed some faith in this kid. I'm glad they cleared up right away that they wouldn't go after a free agent QB. That was really pissing me off thinking that they might go after Brees or Kitna. Thank God...it seems like things might actually be turning around under Gibbs after all. I thought they would, but I did have my doubts. At least now we'll see what might happen with a team that keeps some form of chemistry for at least a season or two. :httr:
|
Now, that leaves a question of what to do with Brunell. If we cut him, it's going to hurt us in our salary cap. Hopefully, he will renegotiate his contract to veteran's minimum and stick around as Ramsey's backup.

Amen. Stability is the foundation Gibbs is building this team on and it's great to see it's more than just lip service. I thought it wouldn't happen until after the season, Gibbs must really feel comfortable with Patrick to make this decision so quickly. I definitely applaud this move. |
I wonder if this may be a pre-emptive strike on Danny Boy. Perhaps Coach Joe got wind of the next free agent master plan the racquetball buddies (Vinny and Danny) were scheming up and decided to publicly pop it before it took on a life of its own.
We all see Gibbs as the coach (where his authority is undisputed), but we have to remember he is also the President (a more mysterious area of responsibility). Now, Dan is stuck b/c he can't "go against" Gibbs. "But, Coach, Jeff George is a changed man, I'm tellin ya..." |
Im glad Brunell isnt getting another look. But im not sure if Ramsey is the real deal yet. He still has happy feet and I dont think ive ever seen him make a second read. He worries about getting killed still and isnt making plays down field. I'll have to see if this is playcalling or his fault.

He genuinely seems like a good guy, he may just do that. It would really help the organization on salary cap and stop Brunell becoming unemployed. Can anyone see another team being interested now? |
Great news.
this team doesnt need any more change beyond shoring up the OLine. maybe a little on the Dline. Gibbs had Brunell take 90% of the snaps in practice, big mistake. Ramsey has all the tools, with some hard fought battles vs. Philly, Pittsburgh and two wins (soon to be four) this season, then getting all the snaps in practice next season, those tools will be plenty sharp. |
My screename is safe!!!!

I disagree that he doesn't go through his progressions, he checks down all the time. As for going down the field I think that's more due to Gibbs keeping a tight leash on him. We saw him going down the field a bit more against San Fran and that should continue as the trust factor grows. |
Glad coach Joe made the decision now. Patrick is doing better the more playing time he gets. We don't need another QB controversy going into next season. Make PR the starter next season and if he can't get it done then and at least get us into the playoffs, then get rid of him and bring in someone new (not Brunnell).
|
this is awesome news, I can only imagine, that Patrick is going to have a boat load of confidence now, he now needs to make this team his, and I think now he knows he is the CEO of offense, this can only help him and this team!!!
|
Stability for a change...very nice.

In addition to affirming his faith in Ramsey as the starter through 2004 and beyond, Gibbs also said (perhaps half-jokingly) he plans to have him throw downfield more in an attempt to at least try to get more PI's called on the opposing defense, to balance out what he suggested are phantom PI calls that are being called against the Skins defense on a regular basis.
Gibbs said he figures if they're going to call the PI's against the Skins defense so often, he needs to find out if they'll call them against the other guys, too. Maybe Gibbs is finally figuring out that this is how so many other teams are racking up huge passing stats this year. Create the one-on-one matchups deep, and one of four things will happen: the receiver will catch the ball for a big gain/TD, the defender will pick it off, the ball will fall incomplete, or the ref will throw a flag-- most likely on the defender. It's basically a 50% shot at something good happening (catch or defensive penalty), 25% bad (interception), and 25% relatively inconsequential (incomplete pass-- though even an incomplete deep throw will at least make the defense think about keeping a safety deep). At this point, maybe Gibbs feels like those are odds he should play, especially with the dividends it's paid to other offenses throughout the league. Now that Ramsey's proving he can be a smart, efficient passer, maybe Gibbs is feeling more comfortable with the idea of taking the next step: developing his deep game. |
I'm liking how Ramsey has started to progress the past few games but he still has a lot of learning to do, so I'm not a 100% sold on this as of now. There's no telling what might happen between now and the beginning of next season but he hasn't shown that he should be handed the job no questions asked. I'm not saying we needed another huge signing, but I honestly don't think the patriots expected Tom Brady to be as good of a qb as he was when they drafted him in the 6th round that year and if someone out plays ramsey in the offseason next year then there's no reason there shouldn't be atleast somewhat of a competetion for the starting job. Handing someone a job for next season has a tendancy to leas to trouble and sometimes even complacency(sp?).

LOL!!! Excellent decision! Hopefully this will set alot of fans' minds at ease on the QB situation for next year. As far as Brunell goes, he seems like a nice guy who might stick around to be as a mentor to Ramsey; heck, it's not going to help us to get rid of him and it's still nice to have a veteran back-up with lot of game time experience. The ultimate thing though would be for Brunell to retire...I just don't think he's ready to do so yet. |
Let's see how nice of a guy Brunell is, nice enough to restructure his deal perhaps?
|

That's something that you don't see very often...Tom Brady just happens to be one of those special players that didn't need a very long time to adjust to the NFL...but most of the time, there is going to be a period of adjustment....such as Payton Manning..he didn't have an explosive year his first year...neither did Farve! It is a very good thing to say that Ramsey is our guy for next season! That is a big confidence boost for Patrick and I think that will allow Gibbs and company to help further his development along and by doing so, it also develops the offense along as well. If someone comes by and out plays Patrick Ramsey and wins the job...hey I'm not complaining; I just want the Redskins to win! |
i'm thinking that a big weight has been lifted off ramsey's back...even though he's played statistically better than brunell (who isn't?), he seems nervous or tentative at times. hopefully, having this fact out in the open will ease things for ramsey and we can see more of what he is really capable of.

Hahahaha...I don't think ANYBODY in sports is THAT nice are they? :joke: |
Hey, Bobby Knight told Texas Tech not to pay him because he didn't get them to the tourny last year! You never know!
|
I think its good news. Let's build. Ramsey showed he was a pro when Brunell got the start. He hung in there and supported the team. Now the team is stepping up for him. He's not there yet, but he's definetly shown he's got the potential to flourish in GIbbs offense. Let's get that o-line up to snuff, maybe add another TE, and lets roll!
Now let's see how the kid handles success! That can be tough too! |
Great news!
Glad to see Gibbs giving credit were credit is due. Truthfully we start Patrick after game 3 and we're probably in the playoffs already by this point. |
Just Great news. Ramsey needs more experience and you can only get that one way. On the field. he's already winning games for us so he should only get better. Plus with an entire training camp next year with him as the starter . As I said he can only get better.
Plus the stability for the team. Great decision by coach Gibbs. |
Gibbs=STABILITY and CONSISTENCY....everyone needs to pack their bags or at least have them ready in the next 12-24 months because the train to the promise land is going to be leaving!
|
I'm not so sure if starting PR earlier in the year would have made a difference.
He looked totally lost in the preseason and he admitted his confidence hit an all-time low. I'm thinking Gibbs knew he needed to build Patrick back up a bit before throwing him in to the fire, and he also needed to grasp the offense better. Putting him out there earlier in the year when he still didn't have a firm grasp of the offense could have buried his confidence even further and done more damage than good. |

Ha, we all know Bobby Knight is horse of a different color! |

Patrick Ramsey admitted that he didn't have a firm grip of the offense earlier in the season, so that could be why we stayed with Brunell for so long. If Patrick had came in in those two games and played outstanding, then possibly he would have started earlier, but since that wasn't the case, Gibbs probably felt Ramsey needed more time on the bench. Anyway, its working out now and I am glad of it! Patrick has the chance now to develop into a great quarterback! |

It's quite possible that Ramsey was stinking up the joint in practice the first several weeks, but slowly improved to the point that the staff felt he was ready. |
And that's why Brunell should've had an incentive laden contract! I still feel good about him baking up Ramsey though. Anyone hear commentators say how the 'Skins best QB may be Hasselbeck? We could've saved so much dough not jumping the gun for Brunell.

Balldinger (sp?) is worse than Maas if you ask me. My brother and I were cracking up at the things he was saying all game long. |
Baldinger sucks at announcing almost as bad as Hasselbeck sucks at quarterback. I hate them both. Hasselbeck, for all intents and purposes, embarrassed this team last season and Baldinger is just a moron.
|
We have to get good if only to avoid absolute morons like Balldinger and Maas. It's like asking which is worse, shit or poop? (kinda like the South Park election episode: either a turd sandwich or a douche bag...)

In fact I was a bit shocked after I heard comments that Joe said Burnell wasn't done yet...what was that all about I had visions of us going through what we already experienced next season with the same result as this year .....I think the return of Jansen with help with Patrick's protection ......I also hope we get rid of Gardner and get us another WR. Coles is a keeper, playing hurt all year and playing hard.......he gets my respect........... |
